Achi vs ide

I think one of my hdds is failing and tried to run Seagate tools for Dos that I downloaded from Seagate's site and burned to a cd.

The cd loads, but says "no devices recognized."

I called Seagate and they said to change to Ide in the BIOS.

In researching online, many people are saying that by doing this, you will have to do a complete reinstall of Windows 7.

Is this true, or am I missing something?

Why are you using the DOS tools? Why not the Windows tools?

If you make a bootable CD and run the DOS tools, you can change the hard drive to IDE, then run the tests, then change it back to AHCI. As long as Windows does't boot up while you are in IDE mode you should be fine.

It's the Dos for Windows test.
So, as long as I change the Ide to Achi before booting - no problems?

Also, when I change to Ide, and change the boot order to cd, is that okay?
