Acronis 20 GB then 13 GB

I use Acronis True Image Home 2010 - I backup up my Windows 7 from a SSD drive and it says 20 GB then 15 minutes later I look again and it says 13 GB I've done this 4 times on 2 drives I use for backup and it's the same story. Any ideas why?

All my backups are done to a separate folder on an external hdd using the 'One Click' feature. My C: drive is 45gb, backup size 3 to 4gb

I don't use Acronis:
Guess 1: 1st is an estimate maximum, 2nd is the real after excluding things like pagefile.
Guess 2: Maybe further compression is being undertaken.

Where does "it say" 20GB exactly? I'm with mjf, though it's most likely guess #1 (pagefile and maybe hiberfil.sys).

I use Acronis Boot Disk with TrueImage and Disk Director Suite regularly but I have not kept Acronis on my PC. What is it that says 20 gigs first and says 13 gigs 15 minutes later? Do you mean the TrueImage size?

Are you backing up on an Acronis created Safe Zone Partition or elsewhere?

I think mjf is right. The program first makes a wild guess based on the total data and partition size. Once it is into the imaging with the ongoing compression, the parameters change based on actual data.

You have that same phenomenon with timing estimates for long up- or downloads or copies to e.g. external disks. Those estimates change all the time based on the latest reality checks.

At least the TrueImage boot disk does not make any wild guess. It does give a guesstimate of the approximate size depending on the level of compression before making the image but it is generally just about 10% to 15% more than the final size.

Similarly the timing estimates start with a guess that may be sometimes be wild but soon settle down to almost the exact time for the image creation.

I am saying this with full responsibility as I keep using Acronis TrueImage boot disk at least 4 to 5 times a month because I always uninstall a program by restoring a previously made image.
