Acronis Disk Director

I am just looking at their website was it recently updated? I don't see Win7 under working OS's.

But regardless, is there any difference accomplishing the above task in either of my OS's? I just want to make sure I don't overlook something and end up screwing up the partitions and then loosing both OS's!

Thanks

I upgraded True Image yesterday. It's got some new features that I've got to try out yet. It can convert from and to Windows backup files as well as mount system backups virtually. GUI is looking more up to date too.

However, I can't say much about Disk Director. The latest build is #2160. Release date March 1, 2007. Disk Director may work with the 32 bit build of Windows 7, but sure craps out on the 64 bit version.

Guys, acronis is hit and miss. I'm on Vista x64 with Win7 x64 in a VM for now (dual boot also, but with no apps or anything, testing is in VM )(going slow). In preparation yesterday I installed new Acronis Backup and Recovery v10.0.11105 Workstation (Trial whew!), I had been using Disk Director + True Image 9.7.8206. I did a clean install, uninstalled first ALL acronis products. All went ok till reboot: BSOD, in normal AND safe mode. Had to stick in my rescue CD and recover my C partition. Browsing acronis forums, it shows they have a serious problem with a driver "snapapi drivers" that control card readers.
ANOTHER BOTHER: I use mostly the acronis secure zone for backups. The new version wont erase old backups by it self.....
Maybe its time to start looking elsewhere ????? :sarc:

I've got good news and bad news. Acronis updated DD a couple of weeks ago. However it still isn't compatible with Windows 7.

At least after manually uninstalling DD using JV16 Powertools and the Windows Install Clean Up tool, the DD update software recognized Windows 7 and aborted the updated installation file from completing the executable.:(

Does MT Partition Wizard install in Windows? Or does it come only on a bootable CD? Acronis DD is also able to make a bootable CD which should work outside the Windows 7 64 bit environment. Can someone verify this for me? Thanks!

Yes, you can install PW in windows.

Check this link - you can download the Free Home Edition installer , and also the boot disc .iso.

I don't think Acronis DD is free, and I believe it has issues with 7.

Thanks. Just tried it and it works very well on the 64 bit system. I guess I will depend on PW to prepare me for next weeks upgrade.

Acronis recently upgraded DD to build 2239 (from 2160) -- but it's still not presented as compatible with Windows 7, and there are bunches of posts on the new Acronis forums about serious problems with this new build.

They are also rumours about a 2010 version of DD -- but no actual release date yet.

Recovery from Disk Director Windows 7 boot failure

If like me, you installed Windows 7 and Acronis disk director only to find out that your PC is rendered unbootable, follow these directions:

Symptom: Windows 7 fails to boot, gives you a brief Vista boot screen, goes into boot recovery mode and fails to recover.

Solution:
1- Boot with your Windows 7 boot disk. Select your language and click repair your computer.
2- Select Windows 7 in System Recovery Options
3- Select Startup Repair

Your PC is now bootable.

Note: I tried doing the same procedure from the emergency W7 that is booted after the failure. You must boot from the installation CD for this to work.

Thanks for posting your fix, mlapoint.

I don't use Acronis - but I am sure many will find it useful.

Sounds like Acronis DD is to be avoided.

If Acronis manage to get a version that works -

I assume they will be giving them out free to those afflicted by the versions that caused all these problems.

Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 will corrupt MBR on Dual boot. Version 11 is supposed to be Windows 7 compatable but no mention from acronis when it will be available. I just bought build 2239 and True Image Home 2009 , just to find out I have to pay to upgrade...not gonna happen....True Image home 2009 works awesome for Win7 x64 as a single op-sys boot.

Seems like the Acronis team dropped the ball on this one. The product was highly rated in the Xp era but they don't seemed to have carried the expertise forward. Like partition Magic in the days of old it seems it you can have enough of a good thing :(. I recently used that partition wizard and it does what it said on the label and was quick too. Can't argue with price either :)
