Activating windows 7 upgrade edition using a retail key?

Can I activate my install of Windows 7 Upgrade edition using a retail full version product key?

My old laptop is dead but it had the windows 7 upgrade edition installed on it. So I can't seem to "deactivate" it on this old laptop. My new laptop I installed this copy of windows on it. And can't activate it using the upgrade product key I have. If I just go out and buy a full retail copy would THAT product key activate on my " upgrade" version I have installed?

Yes, no problem - but you will probably need to use Telephone Activation and speak to an operator, to get it activated.


telephone activation (operator calls)
Click on the Start button
in the Search box, type
SLUI 4
and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions, but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you
