Finally got that refurb'd Dell 9020 online & running (had an issue w/adding drivers until a specific MS KB file was run, a Dell issue, see Dual boot didn't work...). I've installed 7 from a dvd I bought outright some years back for a new build (so, not just already installed on a prebuilt PC) but no SP1. Found this MS page which seems to offer an SP1 dl, but given their history of replacing 7 w/10 w/o the user's permission, I'm a little hesitant: Install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). What is the best way for me to add SP1 w/no issues? TIA!

That's the support page for sp 1 but the download link is dead. You can still get it from here though: Microsoft Update Catalog As for the 10 downgrade (which was never forced) that wasn't built into SP 1 but was done through another update. Also it stopped a year after 10 was released. You should be safe. If nothing else there are still a variety of programs such as never 10 made to stop the 10 downgrade.

Easier to get the installation iso that already includes SP1.

Thanks for the replies, dl'ing both the msu & exe now. I'm a bit reluctant to try the iso reinstall now, the OS is actually beginning to work, so I think I'll try the "update" 1st.

You don't need both. I would go with the EXE. Make sure that you get the archetecture right. 32-bit or 64-bit (x64). If you have 64-bit either the one that says 7 x64 or 2008 r2 will work.

Thanks for the replies, the .exe posted by Townsbg did the trick! After adding SP1, I only had to DL 188 updates! ;-)

What are you going to do when you want to reinstall?

If you had obtained and run Simplix Update Pack 20.10.15 right after installing SP1, it would have brought your copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit up to date to October 2020 in about an hour.

It sounds like Fred is having fun. I am almost tempted to buy one of those and have a play.

Have you got a more recent optiplex - something like a 7050 ?

The OptiPlex 7050 mini tower is a 6th generation Intel model.

I have 3 of the OptiPlex 9020 mini tower - which is a 4th generation Intel model.

I've been thinking about getting a 6th generation Dell OptiPlex model, but I can't justify spending the money yet.

Yep, you're right. The OptiPlex 7050 in the micro form factor case size comes with a 7th generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor.
I previously checked only the mini tower case size.

I am not sure the 7050 will give much more performance than your current system
All of my OptiPlex 9020's came with an Intel Core i7-4790 processor and 32 GB of RAM.

If you really want nvme boot, it can be done with a 9020

32 GB in my opinion is usually too much and wasted money.

The refurbished Dell OptiPlex 9020 minitowers that I purchased came with 32 GB(8 GB x 4) of DDR3-1600 MHz RAM already in them.

Considering the price($350 - $400) I paid for each of them, they were very good deals.

Having looked into those 7050, they are less exciting than they appear. They look cute, but are very cramped for one thing, and I doubt there is any really noticeable performance gain over something like a 9020.

You did well with your purchases. :-)

I've been very satisfied with my Dell OptiPlex 9020 minitowers.
I added a low power NVIDIA chip-based graphics card to improve on their integrated Intel HD graphics.
I'm not a gamer or do anything that's system or graphics hungry, so they do fine for what I use them for.
