Aero mini previews missing after a while...

For you guys who enabled Aero, when you hover an icon in taskbar, it will show a mini preview of the window. I have that, enabled and running, but for some reason, the mini previews will sometimes gone, missing. What I mean by missing is, let's say you have 9 explorer windows, you minimized them all. After a while, I go about... browsing the web, playing some games, watching some videos, etc... After sometime, when I hover the explorer icon on taskbar, some if not all of the mini previews is changed by a generic Window title with an empty window picture (the title is correct). If I use "Switcher" or Flip3D, it all shows the same thing, a small empty window with whatever the label of the window written on the title bar. The only way to restore the mini previews are to click the window, and make Windows redraw it to recreate the mini previews...

Try this go to search type device manager. In device manager make sure your drivers are up to date.

Then try this. Do not use the instructions on the page that says, "test that your drivers are up to date". I cannot vouch for where that will take you.

I have all drivers up to date, the latest for every one of them. I don't think this is related to drivers... I suspect there's some registry entry that needs to be "flipped", or some checkbox somewhere needs to be checked... or something...

Apologies I left out this link above. Do not follow the first instruction to click to test drivers. I cannot vouch for where that will take you.

Err... I think you get the wrong idea... the "Aero" effects are not disabled, everything is on, the 3D effects are on, the glass edge are on, everything is nice and glittery... it's just that after sometime, the mini preview windows in taskbar (it is a part of Aero), is missing, just the thumbnail pictures... not the whole Aero effect...

I hope I made my self clear...

Go to help and support in start menu. Type aero. Then follow the instructions for using the aero troubleshooter. Hope that helps. It should apply to your problem, too. The pictures are part of aero.

edit I just tried it may not apply to your situation, still searching.

Hmm, I've tried windows help, started the troubleshooter, read the help regarding Aero... I don't see anything regarding mini previews...

The "Thumbnail Cache - Vista Forums" is for thumbnails in explorer (for displaying image files), tried that too, still having the missing mini preview issue.

By the way, I set my taskbar defaults to Windows 7's "way", large icons, group similar windows by default (if it's important in anyway, just saying)

I'm googling for more...

Nope, the registry settings for EnableAeroPeek is set at "1", so it's not that. I just restarted, I open one explorer window, then minimize it... I'll snap a screenshot to clarify my point (why didn't I think of that)

I hope this clears the confusion, other Aero effect are up and running, nothing's wrong with Aero...

I have been reviewing similar problems in our forums. One poster had his problem solved by trying another account. Try to open another account, see if it works. If it does it will be easy to transfer everything from your present account to the new one.

Nope, still the same... I think what happen is, the "mini preview" got flushed when Windows "swap" the memory (unloading the memory content from physical memory to the page file because of the program's inactivity). My memory usage is somewhat high (~2.6GB at nominal usage, close to 4GB when I'm working, XP mode and some other services are enabled when I'm working).

Well, I'll keep on looking for the answer...

By the way, this feature is a "free implementation" of Apple's dock preview from what I can see... the "original" doesn't have this issue... I wonder where Microsoft took the "wrong turn"... Just a thought

The last thing that we can try is to to type cmd in search In an administrtors account type sfc /scannow while in cmd See what it reports.
