Aero on/off

Do you save power, using a laptop that is, turning Aero off? Does it save battery life or does it really matter?

I've found, in the past, a few programs and modules didn't function as well as it should with Aero off. This detracted or delayed what I do to completion. In the end, I've kept Aero on. The drivers and the coding for Aero are probably well-optimized such that there is minimal hit or heat.

I kind of figured as much....new to the laptop scene, so I was just wondering.

It really won't have much of an impact, the GPU is never fully off, it clocks itself down and whatnot, but Aero is not really heavy enough to have a negative impact on the GPU even in its down clocked state (or whatever the GPU power management does).

As long as it isn't a netbook, there is no real gain in turning Aero off, as far as my very personal experiments showed.

But for netbook is more an issue of running better on crippled hardware than of battery.

I had noticeably better battery and reduced heat signature of laptops by enabling Powermizer in NVIDIA laptop cards though.
