I believe that particular game has been discontinued and is now impossible to even do just over lan. Although it may just be a compatibility issue (Not being xp). There is a required fee to play anything online, unless that also has been discontinued. AoE III still works lan with Win 7, however its not as good as AoE II. Try the new Starcraft game ;)

Bit expensive though.

AOE2 online servers have been shutdown for years, but you can still play online through 3rd party programs. Lan can never be shut down, its built into the game and doesnt require any online servers. Its all through your local network.

LAN on AOE2 still works, except it uses such an outdated technology, that it only works in Windows XP out of the box. AOE2 LAN works in Vista and Seven but it requires messing around with a few settings.

The below method worked for me.

If that dosnt work try some methods listed here.

Nup, only seven has it.

Will xp mode run aoe II?

Maybe, the problem is all to do with network settings, XP supports the old technolagy that AOE2 uses. So it quite possible it could work. Might as well give it a try.

Or is it worth just upgrad to aoe III?
Well AOE3 and AOE2 are completely different games. AOE3 is not AOE2 with beter graphics. There's completely new game-play and there's all these new units and civs. AOE3 is a good game, just expect it to be a 'replacement' for AOE2.

Did you try any of the fixes I listed?

Windows 7 pro or higher are the only ones with xp mode (unless you are talking about compatability mode). However, games don't run on xp mode, it wasn't made for them. Where AoE II is a medieval style gameplay, AoE III is a western or colonization (particularly of America) type game, so the focus is old style guns and horses, trains, etc. It is similar in that you age up and have technologies, with better graphics. Recommend looking at a gameplay trailer. It works in Win 7 no problem, but I still think it was made for XP. I know AoE II's colors are all messed up when I play it in Win 7

In xp, AoE II is easy to install. go through the setup, then exit and put in the next disk to install AoE II: Conquerors Expansion. After that, go online and download the latest update (it has a c in it, like 1C or something). Can find it off of microsoft's AoE II Conquerors website. Then you might see some playing time.

hi

I have dual booted my Vista computers with XP. Now I can play AOE2 with 4 computers on XP.

The only thing was when I dual booted my 2 vista computers. I couldnt get back to Vista.
So I installed a bit of software called EasyBCD 1.7.2 and followed this guild How to dual boot Vista and XP (with Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots it was dead easy.

SOLUTION: Age of Empires II: The Conqueror LAN play.

ok, i have 2 solutions, after trawaling the net I did not find a suitable solution to this problem. So I've taken the time to publish my solution here, hope it helps.

The problem:
I have 2 XP machines that can connect and play fine. My Windows7 machine just cannot join. After the Start game is hit, the screen eventaully times out. Looking at TCPView, it is constantly making 6 or so new connections every few seconds, which eventually kills my router.

Anyway the solution:
1. Right-click the shortcut you use to launch AOE2. Go to "compatabilty" tab and select "Run this program in compatablity mode for": and select "Windows 98 / Me". It also worked in "Windows XP SP3" but the colours were not quite correct in-game. So I would suggest the Win98 selection.

OK, part b) When creating a game. I get the XP machine to create the game (LAN option), other XP machines connect via the LAN option too. BUT windows7 does not find the game under the LAN option, instead using the Direct TCP connection, and enter the IP address of the hosting machine.
The game is then shown using Find Games, I connect and goes smoothly then after.

2. A second solution is to install "VirtualBox", which is free and supports DirectDraw. Virtual PC does not support this. For a first time use, I needed to add my wireless network adapter in the the list of adapters. This did all work, but was a bit sluggish when trying to play.

Other things to note, I do not use any port forwarding in my router. I do not have static IP's set on any machine, although my router does not change the allocated IPs it gives out to all my different machines (this Windows7 laptop is always 192.168.2.5 for example). I am using AOE conquers that came from my CD install, not any patched version. All the machines have an IP of the form 192.168.2.x ( I know the addresses do not have to match exactly the same for you, but they should all start with the the same 3 numbers (racking my brain for the technical term but failing)). You can use Start->Run->Cmd and then type "ipconfig" to see the IP addresses for your machine, on each machine.

I also run in "Administrator mode" in Win7, and NAT is enabled, and UPnP is disabled in my router. I'm not sure if either of things have any bearing to the solution though.
