Solved All browsers crash on Windows 7 32bit only

Hello,

I have done several testing on an issue recently with windows 7 32bit where all 4 major web browsers constantly crash during use. This only happens on windows 7 32bit.

There is no valuable information on the bug reports from Firefox or IE.

Chrome just runs out of resources and get's a "he's dead Jim" 90% of the time.
Internet explorer stops working.
Firefox crashes.
Opera crashes.
Event manager shows nothing for most of the crashes.

Testing on other OS had no issues on the machines. I tested Windows 7 64bit, Windows XP, Windows 8(8.1) 32 and 64 bit.

This is happening on several machines not just one. I have done testing on fresh installs so it's not malware, nor is it hardware issues.

I have done sfc/ scannow as well as chkdsk /f and winsock resetting.

I've reinstalled the web browsers as well as made multiple new user accounts.

Any other suggestions would be great. My teacher and my class have been puzzling with me over this for the past few days.

According to Google, you're running out of memory.

32-bit machines have a limit of 4GB or in reality, around 3.7GB or some such usable. (No matter how much you have installed.) I suspect there's too much running in the background. Post an image of the Startup Tab on one of the affected machines. Don't change anything yet--Just look.

See attached. I don't believe this is a memory issue as I see the error on fresh installs. Also I got it to run fine in Windows 7 64bit with 2gb of ram (These are school computers).

The 32bit has 4gb of ram installed. This issue is also a new occurrence.

My theories are either there's an issue in regards to Java/Flash causing issues or the updates to the web browsers are conflicting with something in the OS.

Yep, you're running out of memory. There's too many hands in the cookie jar.

Are these development machines? If not, uninstall Java. If so, take it out of Startup. Something used a lot of memory and it's being held in Standby. Applications like Backup, file transfer or heavy I/O programs will do this. It looks like you just need to manage tasks. What size is your pagefile?

The image taken was shown right as Chrome crashed. By default it sits with over 1gb memory free and only 1gb in standby. Thought as I try to force chrome to crash the memory not in standby slowly decreases until it reaches that threshold to force it to crash. Chrome might be preloading the webpages for a faster load (based on history) and that's holding the memory in standby. Removing Java and rebooting and I'll upload another resource monitor right from boot. There might also be a memory leak issue with chrome.

Hi,
Disable hardware acceleration in all browsers and test.
In ie simply go to internet options/ advanced software rendering....
Chrome Settings/ Advanced settings on the very bottom.
Refer to other browsers help for how.

Chrome just crashed with ~700mb free space still available and hardware acceleration was disabled.

Prior I had let it use system managed. Currently I have it set for 100min 5320 Max.

Instead of going back and forth, run this DM Log Collector so we can see the system configuration and related files. Don't create another thread.

Increasing the Paging File from system managed to 5320 max helped chrome last a little bit longer (about 6 webpages instead of 1-2) before crashing. Attached is the zip of the log collector. The system information is not the same as what's listed on my profile as this is a lab computer (for blowing up and unrestricted on the schools network for networking class).

Still looking over the system but did you reboot after uninstalling Java? It's still showing the update process in startup.

Are you stuck with Avira AV? A lighter and faster AV is available from Microsoft called Microsoft Security Essentials.

Yes I tried it with java uninstalled. I have multiple computers configured in the lab. Some have MSE some have Avira some have none. All computers in the lab with windows 7 32bit have this issue regardless. I can show logs of those computers with the same result as well.

Do you have any browser add-ins?

I don't see anything that jumps out except there's a lot running on that 2-core CPU.

Download and install the free Malwarebytes Antimalware scanner. During the install you will be presented a finish screen. Be sure to uncheck the trial and any other software offerings. Let it update then run a full scan.

This is an old image but should be similar.

Some computers have Avira Web protection, some have Java plugins. Most have none, I have tried running without add-ins / extensions and it still crashes.


Even though most of the computers are fresh installs and won't have any bugs in them I ran a scan for you.

Ok. Just wanted to see if MBAM might have flagged any add-ons.

I'm tapped out. I'll ask for additional help and see if anyone else has ideas. It's clear they're running out of memory but they shouldn't with 8+GB. There may be something running that's causing a memory leak.

One last test: Follow the Clean Startup Tutorial for Services and the Startup Tab (before going to Step Two). Then see if they still crash.

Running clean boot still caused a crash. That's fine this has been an ongoing project for us for about 3 days. Any other information suggested I won't be able to test until tomorrow. The labs accessible only from 7am-2pm EST
