Having a bit of a head-scratcher for 2 days - I have an internet connection and can go to websites from bookmarks or links or by directly typing in the address bar, but whenever I try to type into a text box on the web page (like google search box or user name input) no characters appear and the browser freezes with message "abc.com is not responding. Try to recover" with button appearing after 10-20 secs. When I click the button, the web page is recovered but its still behaves the same so just repeats again. I've tried a lot of different things to try to isolate problem but not getting anywhere....

Set-up...
> 2010 imac i3 running Windows7 under bootcamp (all fine for the last 3 years)
> internet connection via BT infinity2 homehub4
> connected via wifi network
> several ipads/iphones/appletv and 2 laptops running w8 connect via the wifi network and Ethernet are working fine
> running MSE and Malwarebytes - no issues or threats found

What have I already tried :
> tried booting in to the mac X 10.1 op system and connect to the internet (via safari) - works fine
> tried using IE10 / IE11 / Chrome / Firefox on the imac and non work - all freezing and saying "...not responding"
> tried same on many web sites - google.co.uk / yahoo.com / google.com / bt.com / msn.com etc - all behave the same
> tried connecting via wifi and Ethernet - makes no difference
> tried uninstalling and re-installing IE - makes no difference
> tried removing and rejoining the network - makes no difference
> tried to uninstall recent windows updates - makes no difference (for some reason the normal restore process to earlier restore point gives error message)
> tried resetting internet set up via control panel (delete all cookies etc and reset)
> tried 2 different keyboards - makes no difference

I'm really stuck - probably its a really simple fix and I'll feel rather stupid, but please help. thanks

Sounds as though you're done thorough troubleshooting. The fact that all browsers fail and restore points gives errors (it would help to know what the errors are) leads me to suggest a more thorough malware scan.

Here's a good reference that runs a number of tools. I've used all of the ones in the guide and would write the same instructions. Just be sure to download the free versions of each tool (not a free trial).

Also be alert during any install and watch out for other software offered (some are only executables - meaning there is no install, download and run) - untick any checkboxes that offer unrelated software (toolbars, etc) . One other thing to note is that when I recently downloaded and install Kaspersky TDSS, it asked me to update - I don't thinl the guide below mentions that.

Thanks for the reply. I followed all the steps and after 13hours of scanning and cleaning.....its still the same - AARGH ! The one new fact I've gleaned is that it works fine in 'safe mode with networking' but in normal mode, browser freezes (webpage not responding) every time I try to type in to a text box (like google search or Hotmail sign-in). Does this give any clue what to try next ?

Let me chew on this for a while, someone else might jump in to help.

Tell me a bit more about the cleaning, did the scans find Malware on your system?
What runtime AV software are you running?---> MSE and MWbytes (post#1)

Thanks silver, I took a quick look at your speccy and didn't see much that might affect all browsers.

Maybe it was buried in all my other text, so I'll ask it again. You stated: ...after 13hours of scanning and cleaning.....

Was there any Malware found and cleaned? If so, what was the name of the malware, or what app found it - I might need you to post the log.
If no malware was removed, then I suggest that you perform a clean boot: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/179159-troubleshoot-application-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

If there was malware found and removed, you might have to run a few more utilities.

HI. The various scans did find a few threats (maybe 9-10 in total) but I did not take a note of them....BUT, by process of elimination I've fixed it at least for now. As it was working I safe mode w/networking, I compared what processes were running in safe mode v normal mode and started ending them to see if one would make the difference. It turned out to be the BTTray.exe application that was the problem. When I ended it, browsers worked as normal. So went in and disabled the Broadcom Bluetooth 3.0 USB in device mgr and that keeps it working after restarts etc.

So happy again but confused - if anyone can explain why this happened and/or how to repair without disabling it, that would be great!

thanks.

Cool, you essentially did on your own what the clean boot would have told you. Very smart.

The "why?" - dunno.. but BT has caused all sorts of issues.

Do you use or plan to use Bluetooth? I fht eanswer is no, then you don't need to re-enable it.

If you're satisfied that the issue is resolved, a workaround is perhaps a better descriptive, please mark this thread as solved or leave it unsolved and wait to see if anyone can answer your last question.

Bill
