This morning (here in Austria the 22 th of October 2015 ) all my 16 hidden updates have disappeared !

They were still there yesterday because I happened to cheque them with my written down list. Among them were 3 x 3035585. They have not turned up on my update list.

Can anybody see if they have the same thing happening to there system ?:)

Thanks in advance

Sometimes Windows 7 get confused.
Often just doing a reboot solves this kind of problem.

Odds are 3035583 will be offered again. You just have to watch for it.

Thank you Layback Bear for your wise words.

Normally I would not have panicked so much, but with all this Windows 10 updating in secret going on, I could see myself being in the Windows 10 forums next! Against my will

Cheers:)

PS; so this could just happen again ?

"PS; so this could just happen again ?"

Yes, it could.

Best I can tell this behaviour started back in mid 2007 when microsoft gave the ability for windows updates to silently update and do housecleaning to itself, see: http://Experts Astonished to Learn Windows Update Updates Itself | betanews.com/2007/09/14/; And it will steadily become more intrusive as microsoft has changed their privacy policy more than once in recent years, and the windows10 update policy evolves.

As Layback Bear stated it does help to reboot on occasion especially when finished doing anything intensive or for long periods on your machine, and don't bet against Bear's odds, KB3035583 is in its sixth revision.

So vigilance is the key....

Thank you Anak !:)

It is happening now every day, one moment there is an EMPTY Hidden updates page.

Then I go and look for new updates being proposed ( my settings are " never look for updates at the moment ) ;

There are sitting :

one important update ;

Windows Defender KB 15597 definition 1.209.28.0

optional updates ;

Microsoft security essentials KB 2902907
" " " KB 3063822

Update for Windows 7 x 64 based Systems KB 2970228 , KB 3048761 and KB 3095649

Then I log off and start again, next go to hidden updates and the're all back

Do you want me to show here a list of my hidden updates ? Perhaps there is one peculiar one doing this ?

This : The discovery, which came as news to many, is that the Windows Update service (known internally as WSUS) updates itself through a separate channel, managed through Internet Information Services. While turning off Automatic Updates makes certain Windows doesn't receive any general update downloads without the user's consent or knowledge, WSUS still checks for updates, including those meant for itself. It can then - and typically will - update itself anyway.:

This was known in 2007 ?

So now a days it is still working in the back ground ?

Well, sorry, I am astonished, but you all probably know this and have lived with it for ages

Apologies for not getting back sooner, it has been a busy weekend for me.

my settings are " never look for updates at the moment "
For better peace of mind I would strongly suggest changing that setting to; "Check for updates, but let me choose whether or not to download and install them".
The never look option could be the cause of the constant refreshing. Give it a day or two to observe the new setting and if it calms windows updates (WU).
The key words here are "but let me choose whether or not to download and install them" it also saves you a step by having the updates sitting there waiting for your interaction, and you can hide any from there by right clicking on them and selecting hide.

There are sitting :

one important update ;

Windows Defender KB 15597 definition 1.209.28.0

optional updates ;

Microsoft security essentials KB 2902907
" " " KB 3063822
If your only anti-malware is microsoft security essentials (MSE) and Defender (DEF) go ahead and D/L'd and install them.

Update for Windows 7 x 64 based Systems KB 2970228 , KB 3048761 and KB 3095649

Then I log off and start again, next go to hidden updates and the're all back
Continue to hide these, and see how they react after changing your WU setting.

Do you want me to show here a list of my hidden updates ? Perhaps there is one peculiar one doing this ?
You can if you like, the list may offer a clue.

This was known in 2007 ? So now a days it is still working in the back ground ?
Yep! And going stronger than ever.

If changing the WU setting doesn't offer relief, we have one more step to try.

Hello Anak, thanks for your responds,

Quick or not ( I say "take your time ", as you are all helping for free, it is already great to get help :).

I have changed my settings to " Check for updates, but let me choose ". I am still offered the same 5 to date.

I like to send you a copy of my hidden 16 updates, but find no way of making a copy of the page :(.

As I don't want to close that page ( afraid they will disappear again ) I will now write them down (only the KB nr) and post them next on this thread.

Hope that's enough ?

Be right back :)

Hello Anak, thanks for your responds,

Quick or not ( I say "take your time ", as you are all helping for free, it is already great to get help :).
You're welcome; Thank you for your kind words.

I have changed my settings to " Check for updates, but let me choose ". I am still offered the same 5 to date.
Continue with that setting. Can you clarify on the "same 5", are they listed below?

I like to send you a copy of my hidden 16 updates, but find no way of making a copy of the page :(.
What a member (like me) will usually do is use the snipping tool and save the snip to a familiar folder in the Pictures Library, from there I can easily find it to upload.

The tutorial is here: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

As I don't want to close that page ( afraid they will disappear again ) I will now write them down (only the KB nr) and post them next on this thread.

Hope that's enough ?

Be right back :)
More than enough, you have some oldies, but goodies there that may have a bearing on your situation.

  • KB 3083710 Important; Continue to Hide, telemetry and Win10 snoopers.

  • KB 3080149 Recommended; Continue to Hide, telemetry and Win10 snoopers, with a caveat; That it may help in running the System File Checker tool.

  • KB 3078664 Rec; I couldn't find 8664 if it is actually KB3078667 I would install.

  • KB 3077715 Imp; Time zone update; I would install. Could have a strong bearing.

  • KB 3068708 Rec; Continue to Hide, telemetry and Win10 snoopers.

  • KB 3035583 x 2 Rec; Continue to Hide, telemetry and Win10 snoopers.

  • KB 3021917 Rec; If you're not going to update to a newer operating system hide this one; Telemetry and Win10 snoopers class.

  • KB 2952664 Rec; Continue to Hide, telemetry and Win10 snoopers.

  • KB 2923545 Rec; Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP); If you're not planning on having someone look at your machine remotely, hide this one.

  • KB 2726535 Rec; If you're not planning on having contact with South Sudan, hide.

  • KB 2660075 Rec; If you never plan on setting your time zone to Samoa, hide.

  • KB 2592687 Optional; Another RDP, This is the same scenario as KB2923545 above, hide.

  • KB 2506928 Rec; If you use Outlook, install. Maybe a bearing.

At the very least I would install KB3077715 the time zone update, as windows is anal about correct timing. Then test for a bit to see if your situation calms.

This is the "other step":
If it does not you could try following the: http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...4840-windows-update-posting-instructions.html procedures, just running the SURT tool and an SFC scan helped me out of a problem I was having with updates.

  • After clicking on the link in step #1 you would click on the D/L link for x64-based (64-bit) versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7, the second one down the list. Before you run it, it would help to set your power option to "Always On" and run your laptop from a wall socket and not the battery.

  • Follow with the SFC scan.

  • Report any errors to this thread.

  • Upload the CBS logs to this thread, you do not have to create a new thread.
I will try to read your CBS logs to see if there are any major problems. You have already had help from NoelDP; He is the best, but is helping here on a limited basis because of recent health problems, in lieu of that I may be able to have tom982 the tutorial author see if he sees any problems in the logs.

hello Anak,

Before I continue, this :

I have asked windows to restore KB 3077715 and KB 3078667.

KB 3077715 was successfully installed and KB 3078667 disappeared.:(
Also this KB 2545908 you could not find should be KB 2545698 :o

I have a severe dyslexia and use the spell check on every 3 th word :)

My hidden updates are at the moment allways there. No more hide and seek, so I will do ( for the moment )
A SFC scan ( been a while ) and post the results here for you to look at.

Thanks Anak :)

Hello thelma; you're welcome,

KB3077715 the time zone update could have been the crux of your situation; Computers and programming rely heavily on System Time and if it is off a bit it can create problems.
When your machine is off and unplugged or no battery the CMOS battery keeps the real time clock running. If the CMOS battery looses power you would see problems crop up with the display clock in the lower right corner of your desktop.

Give KB3078667 some time, it may have disappeared because the time zone update forced windows updates (WU) to look for it in the proper sequence. You could force a check for updates; Go to: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update, you will see Check for Updates in the upper left panel.

KB2545698 is for clearing up display fonts in IE9. I see you use Chrome but it is usually prudent to allow core updates for Internet Explorer (IE) since it is built-into the windows operating system (OS). I have had it installed since 2011, but that was back when I had IE9. One could believe that microsoft (MS) has this cleared up in subsequent IE's like 10 and 11, so you may not need it. You could try installing it to see if it clears up the display fonts, but the difference may be so slight you may not notice it, it should not hurt to leave it installed.

I'm sorry to hear of your dyslexia, all my life I occasionally transpose numbers and letters, but I think it is because I have lived with being left-handed in a right-handed world, but doesn't that mean I'm in my right mind? :p ..... Spell-Check is your friend.

Yes, hold off on the WU procedures and the SURT tool, and just run the SFC scan to see if your situation stabilizes. To post the log you would go to: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and just upload theCBS.log file. I am also left-handed and blond ;)

So three handicaps.

No not really, being dyslectic has a lot of positive things and I passed all my exams with the talking bit.
I am 64 years and ( being a girl, still have all my hair) was forced to write with my right hand.:(

Now I can do both, two completely different handwritings and I can write mirror way.
Also handy with painting a ceiling and using a screwdriver.

I got side tracked here, ( I wonder how many here on seven forums are left handed and dialectic.)

Cheers:)

I found 6 instances where SFC tried to repair the msvcm90.dll of Microsoft.VC90.CRT, this is part of the VC++ 2008 edition, some entries look like the repair failed and some look like it succeeded.
VC++ 2008 edition stands for Visual Studio C++ a programming language - 2008 edition

A couple of questions; What did the SFC scan say after you ran it?

1.) That it found no integrity violations.

2.) That it found violations and they were repaired or

3.) That it found violations and they could not be repaired.

And; Are you having any problems installing any programs?

Thanks Anak,

The SFC scan said it found " things" files, folders ? that it could not repair.

I tried to do a boot ( safe mode SFC scan) but F 8 does not want to work. tried at least 10 times. F 2 works and F 12 works.

That IS strange, because I have never had that before, just does not wanne know.

For the rest I cannot think of any problems, but then, I am a very simple computer user, internet, ( Google), e-mail ( g mail ) a bit of Y tube listing to music looking at some series like QI and my pictures ( Windows live ).

I do my scanning regularly. SAS, mamb and Hitman pro.

And I clean regularly old stuff and history like Google.

Can I give you any more info ?:)

Cheers

On the SFC tutorial Page you will find under Option Two, Step 2, a blue note box explaining what steps to take if you have the "failed to repair" message at the end of a scan. It looks like this:

   Note

  • If SFC could not fix something, then run the command again to see if it may be able to the next time. Sometimes it may take running the sfc /scannow command 3 or more times to completely fix everything that it's able to.
  • If not, then download and run the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) System Update Readiness Tool for your same installed 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7, restart the PC afterwards, and try the sfc /scannow command again.
  • If still not, then try using OPTION ONE above to run the sfc /scannow command at boot.
  • If still not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.
  • If still not, then you can use the steps in the TIP box in the OPTION THREE section below to manually replace the files that SFC could not fix if there are not to many fix.
  • If there are to many files to manually fix, or you prefer not to use OPTION THREE below, then you could do a repair install without losing anything.
If you would like to get help with your SFC issue, then be sure to upload and attach your sfcdetails.txt file from OPTION THREE below in your post.

Follow the first bullet and run the SFC scan 3 or more times, and make sure you reboot in between the scans.
