Solved all my 16 hidden updates have disappaered

Sorry, it took some while. It glorious autumn here so big walks in mountains with dogs go first. Made super pictures of golden, red and yellow landscapes !

OK, did sfc/scannow 3 x ( reboot in between ). Still the same, so did System Update Readiness Tool and sfc/scannow after reboot, still the same.

Did sfc/scannow in safe boot ( found a really good trick for when F 8 does not wanna work ) ( will let you know later ) and this is the last CBS log ;

No problem, week ends are slow, I checked out the Tirol - Alpbach area the other day, and I agree the scenery is breathtaking; You will have to post some of those pictures when you get a chance. If you do post, post in the Chillout Room and post a link here; I know a lot of members would love to see your pictures.


The zip file you uploaded shows 126bytes = 1KB, when extracted it shows 0KB. Can you upload it again, you did it okay the first time but this time I do not know what happened .

If you are using this trick from the tutorial:

   Note

When SFC runs, it logs it's actions into the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. The steps in this option will show you how to see only the specific SFC entries with the [SR] tags in this CBS.log. This can be helpful to show you what files SFC could not fix automatically if you wanted to try and manually replace them.

1. Open an "elevated command prompt" (right click -> Run as administrator).

2. In the elevated command prompt, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This will place a sfcdetails.txt file on your desktop with only the SFC scan result details from the CBS.LOG in it.​

Follow the steps closely or forgo it and upload the whole CBS file, you may have to break it down into a couple of zipped files.

Meanwhile I will ask for backup from more learned minds.

This program is not widely used by the standard user, as its primarily a developer tool.
I have actually removed it from my system with no ill effects.
However if it is required for a specific programm to be run then a pop-up will appear advising that C++ is required, it can be downloaded via MS...

torchwood; Then what you're suggesting is thelma should go to Programs and Features and uninstall Microsoft.VC90.CRT, Version = 9.0.30729.6161 only, then wait until/if she needs it?

Sounds good, but thelma, you need to be careful which version you pick, like me, I have eight (8) entries of 2008 Redistributable Packages of which two are the same, I have two is because one is for x86 (32bit) and one is x64 (64bit) programming. Since you have the 64bit version of Home Premium I would believe you also have two listed, remove them both, Remember to create a system restore point.



Like torchwood said, if later on you do open one of your programs that need Version 9.0.30729.6161 it will prompt and possibly offer to download it for you to complete the installation.

Yes I was thinking along that line. I did a bit of reading about this C ++.

I don't really need it ever I think, I use my PC for very basic stuff really.

So I will go ahead and do that.

Anak you already solved the problem of the 16 hidden updates that disappeared, by changing my update settings from : never look - to - let me choose -

So the real start problem was solved very quickly.

Must say, I looked at my Hidden Updates this morning and AGAIN one of the KB 3035583 has vanished like snow in the sun. Now there is only 1 left.

At one time I had 6 of the KB 3035583 sitting there. Very odd ! I really don't understand that hole update business .

That must be the latest version; 6.0. I hid mine and it is also sitting there in my hidden list....Waiting for my interaction that will never come.

At one time I had 6 of the KB 3035583 sitting there. Very odd ! I really don't understand that hole update business .

You had six different versions of KB3035583. The time zone update and the new settings help clear them out.

Hi,
All I can suggest is to stop hiding updates
Some do not like to be hidden and throws a fit if hidden an example of updates I have not hidden and just leave in the Optional section which I rarely download and install anyway

I really only load Important updates but still review and even wait a week before doing so,
First make sure your update settings are like this,

Just a by the by it may be nothing but on several installs for example I have noticed the updates if they come at all - do so in droves after installing a program by Microsoft ie Live mail or especially Office.

So Thelma have you got any programs that are add ons like those above on the machine? - just curious.

Another thing I find that stimulates Microsoft updates into action is using CCleaner and the dsk clean up and advanced disk clean up Windows feature. Again just curious if you have done any of them.

I am probably wrong or barking up the wrong tree but curious.

I hate windows live male and never use office ( I think I have it some where. Does it not come with Windows 7 sp 1 ? )

But I quiet accidental, trying out something, did do a Windows Disk clean-up, which was so annoying as it took bloody ages.

Also, I decided to download the Windows Defender and Windows Security Essentials updates as I understood on this forum that it is better to keep up with them. and was surprised to find, that Windows Security Essentials started to scan my PC (for the very first time they recon :huh: ) and that took bloody ages too. Of coarse they found nothing

Now the annoying thing is I have 2 new items on my desktop, both the same. They are desktop.ini

I am now trying to find out what the hell that is all about and stumbled on quit a funny thread that was never concluded. I will find it back.

Anak, I will do the necessaries to bring this C ++ to a good end ! Let you know soon.

Do you remember if at some time you wanted to look at some hidden files or folders?

Every time one unhides files or folders you will see those two desktop.ini files in the upper left corner of your desktop, they appear to be washed out.

• To correct this go to: Windows Explorer >Tools in the menu bar >Click on Folder Options at the bottom of the drop-down context menu.

• Click on the center View tab.

• See Illustration.

• Click on Apply, OK your way out back to Explorer, close Explorer.

• Check Desktop, they should be gone.

No I did not look into anything hidden. Apart from these nasty updates, I am not really aware off hidden things on my Pc.

Apart from in Device Manager ( you can choose, show hidden devices ).

I told you, I am really only learning here

Ahh, but you are learning well grasshopper!

Changing that setting in Device Manager will not show those desktop.ini files they will only show if you or someone/thing changed them in Folder Options.

C++ and hidden folders

Hi Anak,
Yep thats what i was advocating.

On a secondary note regarding,
View hidden folders,
If after you have removed a program GO
C:\user\yourname\Appdata\l(ocal-locallow-roaming),
or
C:\programdata.

You will find the "master folders" for removed programmes,
hehe, you can then remove them totally via right click delete.

Yep well there are loads of folks who don't like either and I am not particularly fond of Office after the 2007 version - too finicky and convoluted.

The Live Mail though have got used to installing it now - a bit a of a juggling match with drivers and passwords but now they use the Microsoft account for login - if you use that of course life is so much easier.

The SP1 no Thelma it is a part of the Essentials and the only part of that I use - I lke to stay away form anything "offshore" as it were

Anything that stores stuff other than on my drive that is as the current trend looks to me to be having M$ and Google and who knows who looking after your data somewhere and being a tad on the paranoid side am very suspicious of that sort of thing.

No I leave them to collect digital dust in the Optional section and only focus on Important updates first
Then after I review and eventually load them I review the Optional section updates
If you click on the updates a date of release shows on the right column so they are easy to keep track of.
I was really saying some updates do not like to be hidden mostly the ones on the Option list I posted

There are some 16 I've hidden that don't mind being hidden.

How do you know which once like being hidden and which once don't ( if you know what I mean )

I would usually get I have never checked for updates after a few days or weeks after hiding some
That usually tells me the updates is not liking being hidden
I'd say all of the win-10 ones really don't like being hidden a long with ie11 for me anyway

I have also moved away from MSE and have windows defender turn off or at least unchecked use this program for win defender anyway
I've moved to Panda and have always used mbam premium so I like this security better than MSE...

They keep updating with new versions so hiding them really does not do anything
Just leave them sit in the optional section

Thanks for your explication , I do understand it now.

I have Windows Defender off, I think it's rubbish ( is that the same as firewall ?), it has never ever found something. I was wondering about MSE as I have obvisouly never used it ( otherwise it would not say " Start first scan ). That I can also do without as I have MBAM, SAS and Hitman Pro. When Hitman Pro is finished, I will switch to MBAM Pro I think it is really the best tool.

So, have some work to do now about that C++ and those 2 ini things on my desktop. I keep learning

thelma if I may I have a suggestions.

Make sure Defender is turned off.
Make sure you only have one anti virus program installed.
Remove all others using their online removal tool.

You can use what ever programs you like and trust. Here is what I use and it has worked for me.

Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes Anti Malware Premium
Super Anti Spyware on demand (free)

I have MBAM running, ( it's on in my startup and MSE ) SAS only used when I ask for it. Hitman Pro is almost at the end of the year and only runs when I ask it to do so. ( I will not buy an other year, but go and get MBAM Premium in stead.

Is that the right way ? Thanks very much for your concern
