Like I said, if you have Microsoft Office already, I don't see why you would use Open Office.

However, if your only choice was to buy Office 2010 Home and Student for $149 or instead download and use Open Office for free....it might hang around longer than 5 minutes. But of course, if you required the advanced Excel functionality as illustrated by Jimbo45 above, that $149 shouldn't slow you down for a second.

It all comes down to needs/wants and money. The $149 savings on Office might buy you an SSD, or a new video card, or something else you value more and Open Office might be just fine. It just depends upon the person.

I agree, the reason I tried Open Office is because this was an older PC that I only has Microsoft WORKS on.

I don't use MS Office at home, I am an Open Office guy. I am also not a power user, so I see no diiference other than it cost me nothing. I can get MS Office through work for $10 on the at home program, but just never did. I run 3 PC's at home and it is just more economical to use the free alternative. I could be way off base, but I don't hink they sell a multiple install version, like they did with W7 home premium. I would consider buying it if they did a 3 install for one low price though. We use it at work and I like it, but like I said, at home I am not a power user at all.

I guess it comes down to how you use it and whether or not the free alternatives will work for you.

I'm just trailing behind with good ol Office '07 and Office '03 at work.

Is Office '10 much different from Office '07. Only ask i never really bothered looking into it.

Though, could be worse, i could be trailing along with Office '97.

I use it mainly because of my TechNet subscription, if it were not for that, I would be using Open Office ...
