AMD yesterday announced the Dragon platform quad-core processor 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. Aimed at gamers and computing enthusiasts, the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 BE will compete with the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550. AMD boasts that their X4 955 BE is capable of running up to 7GHz under extreme cooling conditions.

Brent Barry, an AMD product manager, said that AMD was able to more than double the CPU's speed during tests. He further added that Liquid Helium was potent enough to cool the system below -240 degree Celsius than Liquid Nitrogen, which manages to cool down till -140 degree Celsius

"Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550" why are they competing with an already outdated processor? I understand that it is fast and recordbreaking, but how many average users have extreme cooling solutions? I'm just saying AMD needs to pick up the pace. I did like the vid however, I didnt know that those huge canisters of H2(L) only lasted 90min. Is 3DMark05 more cpu intensive? Just curious cause they didnt mention what graphic cards they were using or much else than the CPU.

Intel is a powerful company that has huge budgets and massive R&D. It is and will be difficult for AMD to best them.

The 955's are aimed at the Q9550 in pricing and market share. I am a fan of AMD and use them over Intel, but bottom line is still that the 955 falls behind the I7.

Since I really do not care about benchmarks or applications, I am a gamer, I am OK with this as the 955 in early test results for games keeps up with the I7 just fine.

Granted I would love to have the encoding speed of the I7 but I really do very little of this so again I am sticking with AMD. For what I do, games, the AMD saves me a couple of hundred dollars on overall platform which I use on the video card budget.

So dollar for dollar I am better off with AMD, if I did more application work on my system Intel would be the choice.

Just my 2 cents, my 955 arrives Tuesday! :D Same day of the "official" RC from M$, man that is going to be a fun day!!

PS, can't wait to see how far I can overclock on air...

I'm no Gordon Moore, but I don't think it had much to do with the number of cores. Mainly on how the internal structure of each core works.

Naw. AMD's only fighting the battles it can/will win. Competing against the i7 is suicide, for now at least.

Yea thats the only way AMD can beat Intel...By cooling it to 200 degrees below what the average user would have it running at and by competiting against an older generation processor. Quite weak on their behalf.

The world record attempt was to see how far they can push the CPU thus why that cooling was used. Previous AMD CPU were "cold bug" proned , so this is good news and a massive step forward for AMD. The previous record was held by Intel also using the same cooling. Give them some credit

Its still strange that in Computer world, we have only these 2 major CPU manufacturers. Someday, i will open a new Company and we'll manufacture only CPU's with great speed and cooling method thus beating both AMD and Intel. LOL.
Well, i personally think i7 is the best and the fastest processor so far.

Pretty much there are some minor players in the world, like Via and Transmeta, as well as processors never seen by 'average users' at all unless they are using something other than their desktop / laptop - TI, IBM, etc.

Here is a list: CPU Manufacturer Index - by IndexOfTheWeb.com

However, the fact that they can take the new AMD CPU to -240 (getting much much closer to Absolute zero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) means a lot for AMD fans worldwide - and don't get me wrong, I have been an Intel user for a very long time.

I am glad to see some realists in here that still notice that somehow, someway, Intel produced a *monster* of a CPU in the Core i7 series - but it is nice to know that AMD is fighting back - I hope this means massive price drops on the Core i7s to keep competitive, but I already have my Core i7 965 EE, so.....

Considering how well it performed at extreme temperatures, it should have no problem at room temperature, possibly surpassing the Q9550.

Cooling a processor to the negative degrees Celsius is a double-edged; the rapid cooling may shrink the metal parts of the CPU. Most of those "stunt" CPUs only last for a few hours, then die.
