Hi all!

AMD FX-9370 PC boots up real slow. It took maybe 10-15 seconds for it to actually recognize ethernet network from the time the icon showed up (I had never actually seen the loading circle on the ethernet icon before). Programs tend to open slowly as well, but once they load, browsing responsiveness seems okay.

As the CPU fan was blaring at 2220 RPM, I found that the CPU sits around 55-57C when idle (looking at graphical BIOS settings was literally what I was doing as it climbed from 55 to 57). As I gather, 61C is the max rated temperature of the FX series.

I recently switched the PSU to a 550W Chieftec, as the old one was acting fishy and making the system freeze. It's no longer freezing, but... yeah. It runs one 2.5" HDD, 8GB RAM and a passive GPU, so, 550W should be plenty.

Any idea where should I start untangling the problem?

Hi Higgins,

Could you update your specs please, that way we can assist you in the best possible way, just to check have you replaced anything else than the processor?

Cheers, Boris :)

If you have put the FX 9370 in the motherboard listed on your System Specs that is why. The board cannot power the chip and if you are using the stock fan cooler it is overheating. Put your old cpu back in and buy a Sabertooth 990 FX board to run the 220Watt CPU. Also get an aftermarket cooling system such as a Cooler Master 212 at the very least.

Sorry, I should have noted that we're not dealing with my personal computer. The problem PC has exactly zero parts commonality with my personal rig.

If you need the specs, I'll provide them as soon as I can, but I have seven other identical rigs along with the problematic one and this is the first that I've noticed acting odd in this particular way.

No rush but to get the specs most easily I would use Speccy:

It is obviously overheating.
Clearly, but why? And how can stop it from doing that?

And btw, the BIOS is showing significantly higher temps. It showed 54C after a short run. Then I booted into windows and launched speccy. Hell, speccy is showing 4C as of now.

Edit: So I booted into bios which showed 44C which climbed onto 54C in about two minutes. Then next two minutes made it to 55C, then in the next two or three minutes it made it to 56C and however long it took for me to swype up this edit on mobile took it to 57C.

Edit 2: The other two identical rigs I have float around 52-53C when idle. Both fan rpms are around 2000. No insane noises detected.

First of all change the CPU fan profile to normal rather than quiet. You can do that in the advanced bios. Make the fan go faster. Replace the heatsink compound between the CPU and heatsink. These 9000 series chips run HOT as normal and need really good cooling. What heatsink and fans are being used?

Then I booted into windows and launched speccy. Hell, speccy is showing 4C as of now.
It's unlikely that Speccy will show the correct CPU temp on a Vishera processor. It's reading the core temperature, which on a Vishera is not correct until the CPU die temp passes 45C (According to AMD, which is a load of crap.)

I have never gotten an accurate core temperature on my Vishera (FX-8350), no matter the load or the case temperature. It always reads about 21C too low, and that 21C is just a guess at the real core temp.

Here's a thread that discusses my problems with the 8350 and it's core temperature. Maybe you can get some useful information out of it. It at least explains why and how the core temp is what it is:

First of all change the CPU fan profile to normal rather than quiet.
Sorry, that's just the mouse hovering over that option. I do believe I have it on normal as I haven't touched those settings at all.

What heatsink and fans are being used?
I was wondering that myself, but I couldn't find the image of the stock cooler, so, I have no idea. Cool bright red fans though.

Replace the heatsink compound between the CPU and heatsink. These 9000 series chips run HOT as normal and need really good cooling.
For no reason whatsoever, the rig started to run as normal again. I'll be back if the issue resurfaces.
