An operating system wasn't found

My hard drive just recently crashed, I got an external hard drive that boots via usb. I want to install ubuntu on it but every time i mount the partitions for the hard drive and then install ubuntu on it, I plug it into my other laptop and boot from it then i get this error message: "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any dries that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. Thanks for any help!

Are you trying to boot the Drive using the USB connector to your laptop? if so, as far as i know it will not work that way.
Just hang for a while, help will arrive.

Yea, that is what im trying to do. If there is any other way for me to do it please let me know.

you could try this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/154377-unetbootin-create-bootable-live-linux-usb.html instead of installing the ubuntu to your drive.

Well, what i was doing wrong was that i was trying to boot from the external hard drive and install ubuntu on the external hard drive at the same time, so i got an sd card and installed ubuntu on that then it reconized the sd card and started installing ubuntu.

Did you want to Clean Reinstall Windows 7?
