I am so angry at Dell and Windows that it has taken me an hour to stop saying F%$#. I purchased a new Dell XPS 9100 with windows 7 only to find that they don't ship the operating system disks with the computer. I have installed a new SSD drive to use as the boot drive and wanted a clean install of Windows 7 without all of the junk Dell installs. But when I tried to get disks from Dell.....well they don't do that because they are after market. So I call Windows......nope, can't help you! You bought it from Dell and we don't support it. "But wait, I bought it with Windows 7, I own it, can't I just pay and get the disks...like an upgrade...I'll pay" Nope! You will need to buy Windows 7 again. So I've been screwed by both companies. It makes me sick. This is not how you treat customers. I now am pledging to cross over to Apple! When I bought my daughter an Apple computer it came with.....can you believe...the operating system on disks! If I wrong and Windows doesn't F^$&%^ it customers, prove it to me and I will apologize. Until then Windows SUCKS

After you calm down. This is common practice for ALL OEMs. You get cheaper PCs this way - like it or not.

You can use the COA sticker code to legally activate a clean install of Windows 7. But you do need to get hold of general installation disks (32 bit or 64 bit depending on the system you bought).

The problems with OEM systems is not a new one, unfortunately, so much so that there are options to do what you want ....

If you can borrow a disk, from a friend, of the exact version of windows 7 that you have from dell, you can use the licence on the Dell system to activate and authorise a fresh install.

There are downloadable copies of windows 7 on the web that forum policy prevents me from pointing you to, but it is possible to obtain this (without using torrents and other providers of hacked bad copies)

An alternative is to use PC Decrapifier which is a free software to remove all the crap that dell supplied on your system

Also have a look at EasUs disk copy which will allow you to clone the install onto the SSD, this software is also free for personal use ....

You obviously didn't check what you were buying. Had you done so, I'm sure Dell would have provided you with a Windows DVD if you'd asked..................and I'll guarantee you wouldn't have been charged over the odds for it.

To lambast Microsoft for something that isn't their fault is just a waste of energy.

Ranting at us is a complete waste of your time - and ours.

Apple may well provide you with an operating system on disc, but have you compared the price of an Apple Mac to a Dell? It makes for a very expensive operating system.

Most restore partitions allow you to create a set of Restore DVDs. HP does and I would assume Dell does too. You can then use the restore DVDs to install the system and software on another drive. This way, you have all your drivers and software that came with the computer. It does take a long time though to create the disks, usually an hour or two but you can leave the computer between disks and do something else. Once you have them, put them in a safe place and don't let them get scratched.

He doesn't want "recovery disks". He wants a clean install of Windows 7. I think it should be illegal to sell a computer with an installed OS and no disks. And I don't mean "recovery disks", which just restore the original crapware.

My sympathy is with the OP, though he should have known better - it's been like this for years. But if he googles around, just a little bit, he'll find out how to download a real Windows 7 disk image that he can burn to DVD...

As theog confirms, Dell would have provided a Windows DVD for the princely sum of £5 ($7.50) - quite a good deal I would have thought.

Interesting.
For the actual more princely sum of ~$100 for an OEM disk you strictly shouldn't use this for your own build. You must buy the retail ~$300 version.
This is now current MS policy. That's probably worth being a bit angry about.

These are generally now recovery with bloatware not clean install disks.
The advice given above is that Dell will provide clean install disks. How is this functionally different to using an OEM installation disk provided to system builders who must onsell?

Owner builders would be a moderately sized group who simply don't have the collective bargaining power. Forcing owner builders to buy retail disks must simply be greed. They hardly want dialup "technical" support.

I don't disagree with your sentiments, but it could be argued that Dell are providing these backup discs as a sweetener to encourage buyers to choose a Dell computer.

Although their volume sales far exceed that of a one-man system builder, it'll be interesting to see what sort of licensing arrangements they've got with Microsoft.

Pretty generous I would have thought on the face of it.
