Another laptop that will not power off with Windows 7

A month or so ago my HP-Probook-4530s laptop with Windows 7 x64 stopped powering off after shutdown.
It did before, but stopped, and it will not do a Restart either. Manually powering it off is necessary now.
I updated the BIOS to the latest version, plus the video and audio drivers too.
The Intel chipset drivers are supposedly the latest version already, according to the HP Update utility, and the Intel driver checker utility on their web site.
It WILL power off normally in Safe Mode, but NOT with a Clean Boot.

Here is my shutdown_trace file that I captured using the Windows Performance Toolkit tutorial in this forum.

Dana-shutdown_BASE+LATENCY+DISK_IO_INIT+DISPA.7z download - 2shared

Any suggestions?

What kind of AV are you running and what does it and Malwarebytes come up with on deep scans in safe mode if you can?

Thanks for replying.
I am running MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials.
I haven't run a deep scan in Safe Mode yet, but will try that and post the results here.

BTW, I forgot to mention that this laptop also has Ubuntu on it, and it powers off just fine, so the hardware is working fine.

I just ran a deep scan with MSE in Safe Mode and no problems were found.
I also ran sfc /scannow as suggested by others, and it found no problems either.
Of course, I have also checked the system and application log files, and found no errors there either.
I have done and checked pretty much everything that other people who have had this problem suggested, and nothing has worked so far.
Some of them have still not found and fixed their problem either, so it looks like it will be the same for me.
A few have fixed it though, and the cause was different for them, so this problem has different causes.

This is one of those all too common windows problems that are almost impossible to trace or fix, that Ubuntu does not have...

OK, it supposedly found and removed some Rogue malware the first time, and nothing the second time.
Unfortunately that did not fix the power off problem though.

Try this as well disable all in your start up menu and try rebooting and shutting down several times with all none essentials closed in your start up menu.

Yes, it does.
The only time the issue is resolved, is in Safe Mode.

That sounds the same as doing a Clean Boot, which I tried, and it did not fix the problem.
I booted with all System and Startup items disabled, from msconfig. No luck.
The only thing that resolves the problem is Safe Mode.

BTW, the same problem affects all Windows users too, since I do have multiple user accounts.

I have been trying to fix this since it started a month ago, with no luck.
That is why I said it is one of those almost impossible problems to fix...
Short of reinstalling Windows, which is not a good option.

Maybe read up on repair install in our tutorial section?

If I remember correctly, a repair install is where you boot from the install DVD, then select to repair the existing installation, instead of installing again. Is that what you are referring to?

If so, I think that only repairs boot issues, and nothing else, but I could be wrong on that.
I might try it anyway, since I am grasping at straws now too.

If malwarebytes found some items, I think we need to take a much closer look.

1.) Download herdprotect: (choose the portable version)

Download herdProtect - Free Anti-Malware Platform

2.) Run the scan.

3.) When the scan finishes, save the results per the screenshot below. Then upload the log here.

DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING YET. I will advise if anything needs removed when I receive the log.

Your awesome for reading this.
I ran the Herdprotect scan, and it found 3 programs that were "Inconclusive" because they were not signed.
It did not give me the option to save the results, as shown in your attached image file.
Here is a screen shot of its results screen.

I know all 3 of those programs are OK, so it did not find anything truly suspicious.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Fortunately, windows is still useable, and this problem is not causing any useability issues.

Hmm odd. Mine has the option to still save results after scanning, and I have the latest version. Lets dig deeper.

I would like you to scan with Hitman Pro.

1.) Download hitman pro here for your windows version and install it.

2.) Open hitman pro. Click next.

picture.php

Read and Accept the license agreement, then checkmark the box and click next.

picture.php

Choose to only run a one time with this computer and click next

picture.php

The scan will start, wait until it completes, then click the save log button.

picture.php

Choose a place to save it for upload later

picture.php

Close out of hitman pro.

Find the log file wherever you saved it and upload it using the paperclip

picture.php

OK, I ran Hitman Pro as you suggested.
It found many things, and removed them, but it still won't power off or restart, so it did not fix the problem.
