Installed W7 & SSD Drive, PC will not power off

Hello - After installing W7 on my laptop with great success, I decided to go for it on my desktop. I bought an Intel 160Gb SSD drive (S2 so I could use TRIM) and W7 Pro. I did a clean install (obviously) and everything went well. However, for some reason, my PC (Self-Built w/ASUS P5K3 MB) does not power down when I exit Windows 7! The monitor goes dark, but the PC stays powered up.

If I put the Vista C: drive back into the box, it shuts down fine. I checked for BIOS updates on the MB from ASUS, but there is nothing W7 specific, only updates for "newer CPUs".

Has anyone else seen this problem? THANKS

Hi

There are several things that can keep you from shutting down like a wifi card that is set to wake on lan. Check event viewer (type eventvwr in search) look in the windows logs> applications and system tabs. You are lookin for anything that is a error (has red in left column) and that relates to the problem. Let us know if you find anything

Could equally well be an ACPI issue, I'd be looking through device manager in that regard, and scheduling a Chkdsk pass just in case any data is corrupt.

I'd force a shutdown or two and examine the event logs for clues.

Thanks guys. I just downloaded the latest BIOS just in case.

I checked the Power Options in W7, and they all seemed to be correct.

The ACPI is something I'll check out. I forgot to look in the Event Logs. If I figure this out, I'll report back for future reference.

Well, I am still having the issue. So far, I have:

Updated the BIOS on the Motherboard (ASUS P5K3 Deluxe) which set all setting back to normal.
Installed the latest drivers for the Chipset, Video Card, X-Fi Audio Card
Checked the Power Options in Control Panel
Looked in the Error Log for issues - found nothing in particular

What happens is the SHUTDOWN command is issued from the desktop.
The computer goes through the shutdown procedure.
The video monitor goes out
The power light on the PC goes out
However, the drives and the fans in the tower stay on.

To turn them off, I have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds.

Again, if I throw in the VISTA C: drive and do a shutdown, it all shuts off.

To me, this seems to be a driver issue with the Motherboard. Can it be anything else?

THANKS

OK!! Problem Solved!!

Hopefully, this thread will help someone else in the same predicament as I was. Here's the deal:

It has to do with the ASUS P5 series of Motherboards. For some reason, Windows 7 installs with a power management setting on the IEEE 1394 Host Bus Controller set wrong. So, when Windows shuts down, for some reason it thinks it has to leave the IEEE ports hot.

To solve the problem, go to Device Manager, go to the IEEE Host Bus Controller and right click on the 1394 Device. Select PROPERTIES and then the POWER MANAGEMENT tab. You will see that the item "Allow the Computer to turn this device off to save power" will be unchecked.

Check it and the problem is SOLVED!!!

Thanks to all for your input. These board specific issues are hard for a community to help with, but I appreciate everyone who took the time to respond.
