Another non genuine copy of Windows that is in fact genuine problem

There was a 5 page thread on trying to downgrade from Ultimate to Win 7 Pro but I thought I should start a new thread. I have a thead on a different forum but was hoping someone here might know the answer.

Users computer says Windows is not genuine, was 7 pro, in Sept 2013 we upgraded to Ultimate to use Bitlocker. System bought from Dell, used Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. I spent ages on phone with Microsoft today, they have completely agreed both copies are valid, and the computer is saying they're not, in error, they will not admit that it's a Windows Update that caused it likely.

They took over remotely, and 30 minutes later gave up, none of the methods worked. She then advised me to BUY a copy of 8.1 and do a clean install. I don't want 8.1, if we have to reinstall I'd rather do Win 7 Pro again(same valid code) and then up to Ultimate again(same valid code), or go to Win 10 when it comes out. Of course you can't upgrade a "non genuine" copy of Windows 7 to win 10, even if it is in fact genuine.

We don't want to have to reinstall. MS also told me I need to downgrade to Win 7 Pro, put in the code, then upgrade to Ultimate. To do that they said I have to do a clean install. I've seen all the links to Windows Downgrader but we aren't exactly thrilled to be advised to use a 3rd party app. I have not tried the registry suggestions yet, I'm not particularly comfortable dealing with the registry. Two questions.

If MS had been willing to just give me a new Ultimate code, could I have entered that in and made it validate? The problem is the Ultimate code we have is for the Anytime Upgrade and it will not accept that, and the Pro Code it still says is not valid, even though it is valid. My thought is if they gave me a new Ultimate code, I could put that in, validate it, and be done.

Second question, assuming they won't do that, and buying one is damn near impossible right now(way too expensive), is the only other options, clean install, 3rd party downgrade program, or the registry changes?


This is absolutely crazy that MS knows the copies are valid and yet insists I should buy 8.1, just preposterous.

I just posted the log as requested. Note, I was not sure which area to post it. I've spent so much time online with Microsoft I was fairly certain it's not possible to activate unless they just give me a new code for Ultimate, and they have refused to do so even after admitting the copy of Pro and Ultimate are genuine.

They want me to downgrade to pro, insert the genuine code, then upgrade to Ultimate again. So I came here more looking to find out how to downgrade without reinstalling everything, and hoping to avoid having to mess with the registry if I don't have to.

Your key for Ultimate is a default key and will never activate.

Do you have a proper Windows 7 Pro Retail COA key that is not install on another computer?

I know of no way you could of upgraded from Pro to a Default Ultimate key in any proper fashion.

Could you post the specs of the computer in question?
Does this computer have a Microsoft COA sticker on it?

If your machine came with Windows pre-installed (or you used an OEM System Builder pack), then your Key should be on the COA sticker on the case.
If you used a Full Retail pack for the install, the Key should be on a card inside the DVD case.
If you bought the pack from the MS Store, then you should have an email from them with the Key in it, or you can log back in to your MS Store account using the same LiveID you used for the purchase, and get it from there.

Yes. We bought the system from Dell, it's a refurbished Dell, I don't have it in front of me I believe it's an M6700. We have tried repeatedly to put the product code off the sticker under the battery in but it won't take it because it's been upgraded to Ultimate. Microsoft has confirmed twice now the Pro product code is valid, and the Ultimate Anytime Upgrade key is valid, they have said repeatedly you did not do anything wrong, the problem is for whatever reason, it won't take the code since the update. You can't enter the Ultimate key because it's an upgrade key not a full retail key. If you enter the Pro key it asks for the Ultimate key. I've had 2 different MS employees admit to me it's a mistake on their end not ours. they won't admit it was caused by a Windows Update but they both admitted they can't fix it and want me to upgrade to 8.1

Thanks for the suggestions but they've all been tried. At this point unless MS will agree to give us a code for a full retail version of Ultimate so we can enter that, we're apparently going to be stuck rebuilding the computer from scratch which is a major pain in the neck given the cause here.

Thanks Noel, yes I agree unless MS will give us an Ultimate Key, or we can buy one(not easy these days at least not legally we're screwed and have to reinstall.

It's a fairly obvious gaping problem MS has with this, all you have to do is google the problem and LOTS of people have had perfectly valid copies of windows declared not genuine and had to spend hours of their time because MS can't fix the problem their update caused.

Very frustrating.

Not sure what good an image would do us though, even if I had say an Acronis image of the machine if I installed from it, the system would just declare that to be non genuine. the only thing I haven't tried is restoring to before this started, I've not had good luck with restores they seem to open a can of worms.

I'm just extremely annoyed that MS admits we've done nothing wrong but their solution is you have to reinstall or buy 8.1 not we'll give you an Ultimate Code so you can get back to work without having to do any of that.

Thanks but at this point I think I'm going to do nothing more and take one last crack at convincing MS to give me an ultimate code for free.

If I can't do that I'm just going to see when I can fit in the time to reinstall Windows from scratch.

My experience with restore has never been good, it either doesn't work, or the user insists they've backed everything up, you restore, and they they inform you a critical file is missing from somewhere and it's not in their backup and you're screwed.

That feeling I know!
However, System restore is not supposed to touch User files at all - there's a long list of the locations and file extensions that it doesn't even look at, somewhere in there (which is user-editable, or at least used to be).
Even if it fails catastrophically (which itself is rare) it should be possible to easily extract all user data to external media so long as the user hasn't (like I do) strewn the data folders all over the drive.
