Hi,

In the hopes that someone can dig me out of this mess...

About a month ago a CHKDSK encountered an error on slc.dll. Shortly after that I began to receive the "this computer is not running genuine windows" error as so many others have.

I tried to dig through all of the similar problems and performed a number of steps to try to fix the problem.

I performed these steps to attempt to resolve the problem:

chkdsk c: /r/f

- runs clean

sfc /scannow

- error message showing that errors occurred

checked for existence of slc files and their privileges:

I tried a rebuild of CATROOT2 by running the following commands:
NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC

- no change

I ran System Update Readiness Tool as discussed in the Microsoft Support article: System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7,

Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

- No change

I cannot edit Group Policy as outlined in 2704233 because I am running Home Premium which does not provide group policy tools
I tried the Fix It of the same KB 2704233 but it did nothing.

For what it's worth, here is the latest MSADiag output:

in a number of places.

While I put the fix protocol for the known errors together,
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I've uploaded a file - aklaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\aklaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\aklaa
or
DIR E:\aklaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\aklaa <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

Looks like I still have a fair amount of work to do :)

Having said that, we'll wait for the results of the file replacements I just posted before attempting anything else.
Once you've posted the new CBS.log, please run the CheckSUR tool again, and post the new log file - it will have changed significantly.

Wow, those missing cabs seem to have done lots! I don't know whether all is fixed, but sfc is happy, and MGADiag doesn't show the slc.dll as being corrupt anymore. I don't know how often that licensing component runs, but I haven't had the "not genuine" message pop up since I rebooted.

Here is the latest MGADiag output:

Interesting - I've never seen that slc.dll replacement in a CheckSUR before - and SFC said that it was fixed!
What confuses me is that the replacement version is different from the original one.

I'll post a fix protocol for the remaining errors shortly.

I've uploaded a file - aklab.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\aklab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\aklab
or
DIR E:\aklab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\aklab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

(e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

Hi Noel,

I hope that the sun was shining in Wales, today! Even though the sun is going down here (being up in the Great White North), it did break through the clouds and shine on my machine. Your fixes worked.

SFC was a clean run
MGADiag clean
CheckSUR was clean:

I traveled through Wales briefly last summer, so it will likely be a long time before I can stand a few beers (Brains?) in front of you. Please hoist a virtual beer from me!

Cheers,

p.s. I saw the following tidbit in the green headed information box above Reply to Thread box:
"Do hijack other peoples threads asking for help with similar problems to your own, you need to create a new thread of your own." I suspect your admins meant to write "Do not" ?

Hmmm - I'll have to alert the admins to that typo! :)

To be honest, I haven't even looked out the window today - I don't think the weather was too bad, though.

Brains is one of the few large breweries left in Wales, although there are an increasing number of small ones selling decent real ale instead of what the big brewers like to call 'lager' which is mostly chemicals. My local pub almost always has at least one of them on tap, either from the Purple Moose brewery Bragdy Mws Piws - Purple Moose Brewery, or one of the other local companies.
