Anyone regret moving to Windows 7?

I can understand your dilema

The only trial about atm is the enterprise (ultimate) trial for IT pros which I think is still available (Live ID required)

Windows 7 Enterprise| Trial, Evaluation, Test, Deploy

or if you have an RC install media or can borrow one a key shouldn't be a problem ;)

I would have thought you would have had Technet/MSDN or Partner access but it's definitely worthwhile to give it a trial

i dont regret it, i love windows 7, i did a clean install. from windows vista 32bit home premium to windows 7 ultimate 32bit. i didnt hate vista is was ok, spped was pretty good on my machine not to much slower then 7 about 5 seconds-ish. i had network issues with vista, it kept going to limited connectivity. and i dont in 7, also i like the way 7 just finds all the drivers for you, i didnt even hav to download the display driver from win update or from nvidia's site. it was there all right resolution from a clean install, all i had to do is get the control panel for nvidia.

I've used Windows since version 2.0 (not too many of you had used Windows 2.0, I bet).

Windows 95 was great, but Windows 7 rivals Windows 95 as the best Windows yet.

I got Windows 1.0 for free with the purchase of a Hercules InColor card...back around '87. Oh yeah...it was the best PC in the office...and we still lined up to use the Lisa.

Loving version 7.0 :)

Meh, my desktop is staying on Vista, which is a very good OS, and very stable and fast OS, and has also been much less trouble than XP(which was very unstable on my system). I absolutely love Vista for all the features and customizations we can do.

I did a clean install of win 7 Pro on my laptop though, which I was having some trouble with, but had Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit on it. It is much easier to connect a projector or just another screen and have what you want with it, either expand, duplicate etc than it was on Vista where I had to go to the catalyst center and all that stuff (never am I going with Ati again because of that experience with them).

Windows 7 Was a step forward even if Vista was already a step forward, It runs much faster too than the Vista and beta/release candidate of win7 did.

I've read some of you saying ME wasn't good, but I've used it 7 years and never had problems with it. I've actually had more problems with XP than ME, pretty weird. I've been using Windows since 3.1 :P.

Hi All

Like always there's usually a spanner in the works / fly in the ointment.

On my Laptop -- no question at all -- W7 is there to stay.

On my main desktop I'm not so sure -- since its got 12GB RAM and as I need to log on to loads of different applications the lack of virtual desktops is almost a showstopper here. (Ok there are some 3rd party one's but nothing like the completely configerable desktop powertoy in XP).

So I've actually REMOVED W7 from my desktop and replaced it with W2008 Server R2 and fire up a load of XP virtual machines with their specific apps on them.

I've also got a W7 ultimate VM for my main Email, Internet and Office apps, but apart from that I probably still am using XP 80% of the time now.

Don't get me wrong -- I Love W7 and will gradually migrate the XP VM's to W7 VM's but there's no rush yet especially most work applications still need an XP front end.

I'll probably convert my music streaming app with its MySQL database over to a VM W7 first.

Since machines have much more RAM in them these days MS really should have provided a decent virtual desktop facility -- with EACH desktop 100% customiseable.

This is what I mean -- makes it much easier when running loads of applications. This is a SINGLE VIRTUAL XP machine with 4 desktops - and each can have their own set of apps etc. (You can of course cut and paste between them etc etc). The desktop facility is the DESKTOPS from MS powertoys sysinternals.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there

Thanks for the info - the application is fine up to a point but I've tried that one and it still doesn't do EXACTLY what I want -- each desktop to be TOTALLY separate with own backgrounds, MENU, and desktop Icons.

For example if you need to logon to 6 or 7 different SAP R/3 systems each with say 3 different clients (Development, QA/ User Test / Production) you can see why I need this type of application.

It has also crashed a number of times so I gave up on that one.

Running a number of VM's on a 12 GB RAM server gives me the best of both worlds here - as I can migrate as and when I need to.

Note the main download link reports UNSAFE website -- there are others of course but beware of this one

Cheers

Installed WIN95 day of release after having bought a PC with WIN3.1 on it initially, likewise WIN98. Skipped WinME (though did have it just never installed it), skipped 2000, went XP the week of release, likewise Vista.

Never regretted any of them. Especially liked WIN95 and Vista.

Beta'd WIN7. Really impressed with it's lightness, crispness (though I DID have a freezing issue intermittently), so I bought and installed WIN7 on the day after release.

Absolutley no regrets. To me - Vista on steriods - I love the interface and the speed.

Really -what's NOT to love about it? No doubt I WILL find issues the more I delve, but right now, extremely happy.

And I have been helped immeasurably by those here whenever I have sought advice - that's a help too!

From Windows 3.0, through most of them, until Win7RC and now Win7.

They all had their good points, and I enjoyed each one.

Win7 has a very good feel, I was comfortable with it from the first day.

Absolutely no regrets.

Waiting for Win8 ;) :D
