Anyone regret moving to Windows 7?

And used Windows 386 ...
My first computer was a 286, and I used a word processor called WordStar.
My first was an Apple II. Integer Basic. Load Programs from cassette tape. Video was RF converter to a black and white TV. I used a hacked version of VisiCalc.

I still have it. Figured it might be collectable some day.

Hi all,
I just bought my laptop last month and it came with Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I recieved my Windows 7 upgrade disk and have decided to dual boot it with Vista, rather than upgrading. I am just curious as to how much trouble it is to remove Vista completely, later on, after I am sure that Windows 7 is compatible with everything that I need. (I have a firmware backup of my cell phone, and on their forum, they say you can't restore the firmware to my cell phone using Windows 7 for some reason.)

Welcome!

Removing Vista is no problem at all. In fact, all that you will likely need to do is just delete the partition.

If it breaks anything, a startup repair always fixes things.

windows 7 is IMHO the best OS out there at the moment, it just works, you can't put your finger on exactly whats right with it, because there isnt any one thing, from pinning icons to the taskbar, to super search, to intelligent memory management (try putting your PC to sleep next time it needs a restart to clear out the RAM, it will clear it out then and there) to Aero Snap, to a compatibility mode that actually WORKS! it all just fits seamlessly

some of it is so basic, remember the days of having to trawl through the start menu to find that program you wanted to launch? i was fixing a pc with vista the other day and needed to access the command prompt, opened the start menu, typed cmd, no results found, it actually makes me wonder why they even bothered putting start menu search into Vista

only gripe is i think certain things, (like command prompt) should default to run as admin, its a bit pointless else,

I have no regrets from leaving Vista for both 7 beta and for Mac OS X at the same time.

The only thing I use my old, slow, totally broken Vista laptop for now is as a backup HTTP server for my website, it has a massive load spead of 0.05Mb per second and a ping that's slower than snail mail.

I'm running 50/50 on this one...

I like win7 well enough, certainly the "new" UI is much easier to get along with.

But I ran into problems with my HTPC ... It's a dual core ATOM/ION machine (ASRock ION 330) and it plays any media I throw at it perfectly under XP, but it just couldn't cope with win7 ... I had to switch is back to XP in the face of a family rebellion...

I still have w7 on my private desktop machine and it's doing ok there. I get occasional (very rare) desktop lockups I haven't figured out yet (reboot and it works fine for another week or two) and I need to be on Win7 for software I'm working on ....

I tried it in my Acer Aspire One netbook and it worked ok there too... But I ran, again into the ATOM processor --lack of horsepower-- problem and wound up putting it back on XP...

So the machine I need the most is making me happy with win7 but I do have to confess to being quite disappointed over the multimedia performance in the HTPC machine...

Just switched from Vista to Windows 7 last month and I like 7 just fine.

I started learning about computers when XP was The OS. In 2008 I built my first PC and decided to dual boot XP and Vista. Jeez, I wasn't brainwashed about Vista being craptastic, but I did hate Vista until I learned to employ it as easily as XP. Then I thought it was in many ways better than XP--if you had abundant resourses.

After upgrading to 7 and a few tutorials I shucked XP, moved my Vista to a laptop and I ain't looking back. No regrets.

Regret moving to Windows 7?

We tried Vista but found it slow so went from XP to W7.
We have IE8 and IE8 64 bit (which can't do video because theres no flash player yet for it).
There is no Email software to push users to do it all online using Windows live...
When we use our Ms Office the outlook forgets passwords so they have to be re entered on each run.
That was after I managed to remove malware (before we had been on the internet) to totally disable our Outlook 2002 dressed up as a system app.
Our Dell 944 printer won't work with W7 so we had to get a new printer.
The new printer won't print from nearly all apps (that are any use) as all printers seem to do with W7.
I had to remove a W7 update yesterday that claimed our expensive version of office is not genuine.
We have to run an old Asus notebook (which we were replacing) to do all the jobs that our new W7 system won't.

Wouldn't it be nice if, just once, Microsoft would finish something BEFORE THEY RELEASE IT!

I long for the day when there is more choice in the market so that we can avoid Microsoft's faulty, unfinished, lackingly supported lash-ups for good....

So:

Yes! We regret moving to Windows 7 even though it appears better on first use...

I'm a Vista 64 bit user. I have never disliked Vista. IMO, most people who say they don't like Vista are either the very early users of it, or they've been brainwashed to not like it. It's been my favorite version of Windows since 3.1.

Today I got my free upgrade to Windows 7 in the mail and I still haven't decided if I'm gonna upgrade. I already know some things about Windows 7 would annoy me. For example, no classic start menu. I hate the non-classic start menu. There are other things too.

Anyway, is there anyone here that LIKED Vista, upgraded to Windows 7, and wish they didn't?

Asking that question in this forum is like going down to a Ford dealer and asking who likes Chevy's. Having said that, I believe my Sig says it all.

I long ago had a windows 3.1 machine (1991) which always worked well, there were never any problems with the OS at all and the hardware was reliable also )Packard Bell .
I was using Compuserve and visited many BBS sites some which even then had the ability for real time posting and receiving posts!!!! Really cool stuff at the time!

Moved to Win XP originally was a bit dicey of course the Norton security suite 2001 was responsible for most of the slowness and other glitches but we never did get a virus while using it!

As time moved on we updated to Sp1 (pretty good) sp2 (better) and then sp3 (about the same reliability as sp2) and with lighter security suites (MSE) things were actually very reliable and everything worked.

I would say the only weak spot with Win XP was windows update, it just seems like it always has the potential of breaking something. This on a PC which has very few programs on it and all of them are well known and on millions of other PCs as well.

Finally realized that the old HP Pavilion 7955 was getting very old and the P4 1.5 Ghz and even with 1.25 of PC133 SDRAM it was time to be moving on as performance was slowing down because of progress in programs.

Bought a very nice HP Pavilion p6680t CTO with Win7 Home, Core i5 760 (true quad core!) and 6GB of 1066 ram.

Very fast machine, and has been very stable, much more so than our old 7955 started out ! This is good.
Only the most major and popular software is installed and active Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader 10, Google Chrome, and one HP printer, there is some bloatware but it is not active or installed, just loaded.

The ONLY problems we have had is with WSUS ..... Luckily it has only been ONE update that caused a small glitch when it didn't install it would try and configure for about 3 or 4 minutes and then revert to previous state only resulting in slowing down when the PC was booted up. I finally tracked down the offending update kb982018, and uninstalled it (not critical only optional ) and everything was fine again!

I would ask MS to definitely work on making WSUS auto updates even better ! I realize the millions of possible configurations that are on PCs out there but surely if you only have a few other programs on the PC and they can't nail this down ...........??? In my view Windows Auto Updates is still the weak link in an otherwise great OS.

I know that Win8 is just around the corner but it seems that they are introducing this a bit early considering that they have just begun to build momentum with 7.

Well that is how I see it.

Well... I hate moving to Windows 7 :(
Finally it happened. New comp bought by my BF.
And for over a week from installing so many issues. He just told me, that "there was a time I loved my computer, those times are definitely over"... Every day new issue, new "cannot".
1. It needs PROGRAM to remember icons positions. Common?...
2. It doesn't support best Force Feedback joystick its own production: Sidewinder... My BF told me that he will not spend a lot of money to find decend replacement (Which is supposedly not possible). I had to move on to Cyborg X joystick from normal Sidewinder Precision 2. Well... it is pain. No better joystick than Sidewinder, sorry...
3. Total problem with owning thing and administrator things.
4. For example we couldn't change skin in Winamp and couldn't download any plugins. PAIN IN THE ASS...
5. No Outlook Express, Windows Mail is stupid, Thunderbird annoying, won't buy Outlook 2010 for sure... No using mail whatsoever then.
6. Hypersnap started working after XP mode turning on (even if it is last one edition and should work), one hour of anger...
7. Making stupid partition during installing (100MB) for system?! Cannot make my own system partition. Stupid...
8. Favourite marine aquarium screensaver doesn't work too.
9. ACD See doesn't work... We won't buy new products only for stupid system :(
10. System crashed after installing new update. So update is now off.
12. It doesn't work with proper frequency with old and good CRT monitor. STUPID!

So we now are afraid to turn on comp and install anything new. Great, great dissappointment
