Was great for several months, now have an application hanging problem. Works ok in safe mode, but in normal, all applications hang and some like skype drop out. Updated the video card driver, ran 3rd party virus scans in safe mode, ran registry programs, problem still exists. All programs hang as in Not Responding. Process explorer does not show any intrusive problems, event log says nothing, am perplexed.

Welcome!

Have you tried a virus scan? Download Malwarebytes and do a scan.

You can also try a System Restore to a point before the troubles.

Sure, did all sorts of virus scans including malwarebytes, Norton 360 and the outdated Spybot. All in safemode, no problems in safe mode, including w/ networking. Appears to be a W7 problem.

Nothing to note in eventvwr or process explorer. Looks like need a W7 update to fix this.

Did not have a restore point so that option not available, too bad because 10 days ago no problems

Well, you can try a Repair Install.

Do note that Malwarebytes does best when run in normal mode, not safe mode.

I doubt that it the issue, though.

Tried to run Malwarebytes in normal mode, far too painful as it hung frequently and after 8 hours gave up. Got sick of it all and reinstalled W7 from new, another 8 hour session. Seems to be faster boot, shutdown and load programs, but still has the painful random program hang. Every program. Pulled all the USB devices and problem persists. Am seriously thinking of going back to Vista or better yet get a Mac

Go ahead, get a Mac. For the $2000 you will spend, hopefully you will not get problems such as this.

Hopefully you could save yourself a buck and get a hold of some installation media. You can order a DVD from Microsoft, for the cost of the shipping.

You can also head to Torrent; just make sure that you verify the hash first.

JK,

Is that the official attitude for problems with this software? Sorry to hit a nerve with the Mac threat. What is your professional opinion on what I should do next? I have checked with eventvwr, nothing, process explorer reveals nothing intrusive during these annoying program hangs, reinstalled W7 to no avail. After reinstall, it seems better performance for boot, load programs and shutdown. But it would seem now the program hangs are less frequent however more severe in terms of duration, usually requiring reboot.

I must confess I do not know the answer. Let me get more help for you.

I apologize for being snippy in the last post... it's been a long day, and I'm tired. Please don't take it personally. :o

Hii and welcome

Johnathan_king has asked a few of us to stop by and see if we can help. Im not familar with the thread but noticed you said there was nothing of not in eventvwr. I have to ask some questions im sure have already been asked an im sure given that places you have looked are capable.

In eventvwr>windows logs>application, and system tabs. critical errors with app hang, app crash
In sytem control panel>advanced>performance> DEP default is MS apps only, if all are checked or it is grayed out it could easily cause this

In device manger, any "unkown" devices with yellow triangles on them.

Have you had any BSOD's?
If it were a desktop I would say reseat the ram, video card, and nework cards.

let us know and we see what we can come up with. If I dont get back to you within a day PM me. I work both here and in the vista forums.

Good luck

Ken

JK,

No prob, I also had a long day lost on troubleshooting this issue, my response was baited with an anti MS tinge as a result of my frustrations. Anybody else have a suggestion to fix this?

Hi Ken,

Device manager clean, no yellow triangles. There are no app hang or app crash events in eventvwr. DEP is set for Windows only

Computer is a laptop. Dig unplug adapter and remove battery for like 10mins. That has worked in the past but not this time. Remove and reseat RAM is not really easy without affecting warranty being a laptop. Even cleaned the cooling slots in the bottom with air. Never any BSOD, just get a "Not Responding" in the title bar of virtually every program at random times. The only program to drop out is Skype, the call drops not the program. It used to hang, then drop the call and immediately respond. After reinstalling W7 it now hangs, drops the call and remains hung for several minutes. Process explorer shows no intrusive programs and CPU usage is always in the high 90's for system idle process. eventvwr has no hang app events. Works fine in safe mode. Device manager is normal, as in no yellow triangles. DEP is windows only.

You could reboot the System in Selective Startup then see whether it works fine. If so enable one by one and possibly you could find the culprit.

Hope this helps,
Captain

Does this laptop have an SSD?

Does the HD light come on and stay on during these hangs?

Does the mouse work at first but also eventually stop responding?

Disk light is normal flashes, the computer does not hang just individual programs. So if an app hangs I can still bring up other non hanging programs. There has been instances of 2 or more apps hanging at the same time.

Ok,

Typically the individual app hang has been because of HD issues. App needs something from the HD but the driver is stalled and then one by one al lthe other apps hang behind it. But ususaly the HD light will turn on and stay on durin gthe entire event.

So it seems less likely that the HD system is the cause.

The other issue that I have seen hang apps is if the video driver stalls. Then the apps turn white and ususaly when it recovers you get a "video driver as recovered" message.

Though this could be some other single resource bottleneck, I only know a quick answer to the above two issues...

Selective startup still has the problem, system services only no startup programs. Will go thru system services to find out which one.
