Hey guys,

I have an application window that won't resize. It will fill the whole screen and when it is minimized it shrinks in to the task bar. You can't resize it. I closed the application, shut it down, restarted and re-opened and it continues to have no medium to it. Any way to fix this?

So the window is either minimized or full screen but nothing inbetween?

Clicking on the middle button on the top right of the window (next to the close button) doesn't fix it? (Tool tip will say "Restore Down") Or also try double clicking the task bar?

No, its really odd. I've right clicked on the toolbar icon, I have don't every button on the top. It is only full window screen or no screen (nothing showing). I just want it a small window, one I can move around on the computer screen

Well the app may have been written specifically to only do that... or does the app work fine on other machines?

There are several type of apps that are topmost/full screen or minimized only. Like POS apps, kiosk apps etc. So it's not uncommon.

Try this:

  1. Find the shortcut for the app you want to run in windowed mode instead of full screen.
  2. Right click on the shortcut, select Properties.
  3. In the Target field add: -window at the end.
  4. Click OK.
OR:
Alt+Enter while in the application.

I have an app that one window exhibits the same behaviour. It is a HP scanning app. the preview screen is the guilty party. I haven't found a fix but I have fixed a blame. The program code can't handle the screen resolution that I am running at.

From my experience, there are some apps that just can't run in windowed mode.
The only way to make them run that way is to emulate them in a program that can be windowed, I guess, but never tried it.

This window problem is new. It has been small for 20 years and now it will only run in full screen

Thanks guys I got it, heres how.

After you maximize the hidden window try right clicking on it's icon
in the task bar to see if the "Restore" option is grayed out. If it's
not grayed out try selecting "Restore" to see what happens to the
maximized application window.

In theory it is possible that the Window is actually opening normally
but has been moved off the visible display. If that is what is
happening you would see the "Restore" option in the task bar icon and
when you selected "Restore" the window would disappear again.

If this is what is happening you should be able to select "Move" in
the new Windows task bar icon and use the cursor keys to move the
hidden application back into view.
