Hi, I've heard some good things about registry cleaners and how they can speed up your system. But, at the same time people also warned me about using them because they can sometimes crash your system by removing an important registry key. I just wanted to know if registry cleaners are safe.

The warning you have read in the most part are true. Registry cleaners do not speed up the computer. Doing anything with the registry without the proper knowledge can be very harmful and many times is. Most people that have some knowledge of the registry and want to use a program use Ccleaner. Their is still always a risk.
While we are in the area. Please don't use and 3rd party Tune Up programs. Windows 7 doesn't need or want such programs. They can also cause problems with the registry and many other things.

Theres no need to use them imho. Way more harm than good and its very easy to brick your system if you don't know what you're doing. I agree with Layback Bear about those "tune up" programs too.

Agreed, and if you never use them, you also never run the risk of getting malware by clicking one of those ridiculous "your computer is running too slow" ads.

Thanks for the reply! but how about 3rd party defrag software? Or is it best to use the windows one?

I use a tool called AusLogics Disk Defra which has more optimization settings than the standard windows one. Get it from Download Auslogics Disk Defrag Free.

As for registry cleaners, I use CCleaner myself, its disk tidy tool is very good. Registry cleaning can be useful for fixing issues such as old entries from poorly uninstalled software. It does not really speed up the computer at all, just more efficient.

I too use Auslogics disk defragger and have never had a problem with it. Used it for years and run it once a week.

If you MUST for whatever reason, and I can think of none, use a Registry cleaner the one in Ccleaner is probably the safest. Read this about them :Why I don’t use registry cleaners | Ed Bott
