I am a retired chef and my hobby has become Charcuterie which is the craft of salting, smoking and curing meat products.
I have noticed lots of small programs relating to it and would like to know in which computer program they were created.
These programs are or the small standalone type where you enter a given meat weight then it calculates and displays the amounts of the various ingredients you need for that specific weight.
Much like an excel program, but without showing the actual excel sheet etc.,
Any comments on this welcome.

Many thanks
jack

Those could be almost everything compiled batch files, vbs scripts, Autoit applications etc.
Basically a simple conversion script wrapped in an i/o operation...if you could point one out I might be able to tell you more.

just can't tell from that.

something like that could be written in almost any programming language, using a whole variety of tools...

I agree Mickey....................
It opened as a doc file but could have been written in just about anything.

Well, what I see is a zipped (packed) MS-word XML application
I can't run it since I don't have MS Word and Wordpad only shows the form without letting me punch in values.
So it's a set of XML files that rely on MS-Office parts for the execution.
(if you open the file with Winzip or 7zip you'll find all the XMLs and the form itself as a PNG picture under word/media ;)
Without getting into XML scripting it's certainly easier to create similar files in Excel.

that's the new word 2007+ doc format, i do believe.

i'm no programmer, simple scripting is more my line, but i recognise a file format when i see it. ;)

Docx differs from the previous default format used by MS Word, it is not a binary file that needs to be interpreted, instead, docx is a package of XML files that have been compressed together using the zip file format, a system used within MS Windows Explorer for its compressed folders functionality. When unzipped, the folder is found to contain several subfolders, all of which have at least one XML file used to store document properties, along with a single file under the ‘Word’ folder that contains the authored text.

As you can gather I am not very technical and my last questions is:

Looking at the picture in the Word file would it be possibel to create this in MS Excel and display it as a stand olone program?

i'm not a programmer, but i don't think so.

excel is for spreadsheets...and macros won't cut it.

you would need something like visual studio (express version is free), and learn how to program visual basic (for example).

it could be the start of something beautiful...;)

*edit* somebody around here was asking for programming suggestions recently - do you want such a program built for you?
