Solved ASRock 890FX Deluxe 4 Chipset drivers

I'm attempting to verify that these drivers did install properly, but going through the Device Manager, I don't find anything that seems to relate. If I understand, a driver download that I have called AllIn1(8.70a_WHQL) is the driver for this purpose, but all that it contains is a file named aticmxx.sys, with no installer of any kind.

I did install the AllIn1 from the motherboard's CD, which did say that it had installed properly, but there are only two items in the Device Manager that look as though they are connected ...the ATI IO Communications Processor PCI Bus Controller, and the ATI IO Communications Processor SMBus Controller, both listed under System Devices. Both of these items have drivers that are labeled as MS drivers dated back in 2006, so I doubt that these have anything to do with the AllIn1 driver.

I have been looking for instructions on how to install the .sys file I mentioned above, but haven't found anything. I really could use a hand here.

1) .Sys files can only be copied to a folder by themselves, to install them one needs an .inf or .exe file.

2) For an intel chipset, I just expand "System devices" in device manager and look for something like intel chipset controller. So, mine looks like this and it too has a driver dated 2006.

I could be wrong, but your attachment looks somewhat like the ones for the two items I found in System Devices that I mentioned, but like your's, they are somewhat dated. The downloaded file that I have is dated 1-13-2010, so it appears to be much more current. However, I noted that the file size is listed as 0 kb, so I opened it in EditPad, and it was entirely blank. Maybe I just got a bad download...don't know.

Since there is no installer, I did do a search from the Start Menu, and it found nothing on the computer by that name, so I cannot simply replace it, and I don't know where it should be anyway.

Well, my computer is very new and the chipset installer is dated 2010.

Yes, I can understand the date of the installer, but it is much newer than the dates of the chipset driver that you showed. If the chipset installer is dated 2010, I would think that the chipset driver would be newer than 2006. Whatever the case, that still doesn't explain how I should install the chipset driver for my motherboard, since there is no installer, and no file by the same name already installed in the system.

Umm..I just checked and its a massive 189 mb in size, so make sure you've downloaded the right thing.

Typo in that driver name? A Google search brings up nothing, and I also downloaded that "all in 1" from Asrock and it isn't in there either.

I can also tell you that for what is in the one from Asrock is that is is at least a year old, with some of the driver files being 2 years old. Then again Asrock isn't much different than most motherboard manufacturers in that they usually only put up one chipset update after the board is released, and even then it is debatable whether it is actually an update or just a convenient download of what came on the driver disk to begin with.

For that board with an AMD chipset you can et what you need straight from AMD,

AMD RAID/SATA Drivers

You will want both the South Bridge driver, and either the AHCI or RAID driver depending on how you have your drives connected.

As for those with the Microsoft drivers, that is all they will get/use.

Yes, the only reference to 8.70a_whql i found is here (scroll down).

Everywhere else its just 8.70_whql which is a full 234 mb, so most likely has the installer bundled.

Before I saw stormy13's post, I started a download from downloadplex that is 237.2 MBs. I then went to the AMD website and found 3 smaller ones, but then I suspect the larger size of the others is why they are called AllIn1. My primary interest is in the actual chipset drivers, rather than AHCI or RAID, because currently I don't use either of them. That will change, when I get ready to install XP on another drive, which will be AHCI, but my mind only works on one thing at a time.

I'm curious...doesn't the northbridge also require a driver?

The ones from AMD are the actual chipset drivers, there is nothing else to look for. Asrock may have made the board, but the chipset is from AMD and so are the drivers. All Asrock did was take the three from AMD and put them into a single install instead of three individual downloads.

Other than the one from Asrock being older, they are identical to the ones from AMD.

I just installed the AMD SB driver, and then checked in the Device Manager, and found nothing different than before, so I guess that I have done as much as is possible. I just wish that I could find something actually labeled southbridge or chipset in the Device Manager. It would make me feel more confident.
