Assigning NIC in Virtual XP

OK, my problem is simple yet, I do not use virtual xp at all so I am kinda lost here. I have a customer that wants to run his IP based printer from this VM using a software that is not win7 supported. The software loaded perfectly. I just need to get a NIC to work so I can ping the printer at a static IP. I see a (Generic) Intel NIC in the Network Connections window on the VM, I can even ping the card when I set it up as static. But I cannot ping the IP printer from the VM. They are connected with a crossover cable and all works perfectly from 7 (i.e. pinging the printer) but on the VM I get timeouts. There are 2 NIC's on the physical 7 OS and both are functioning perfectly.

My question is 1st- Why do I not see a physical card on the VM?

2nd- What do I have to do to get one of the two cards to talk to my IP printer from the VM?

Make sure you are using bridged mode rather than host only networking within the setup of the virtual machine.
