Assisstance required with network and sharing

Hey,
i have windows 7 on 2 computers, one has windows 7 ultimate 32 and other has windows 7 home premium 32. both are connected to my router using wireless network, one is desktop and the other is laptop. the thing is have shared some folder and drives, but i had to set permissions to everyone. so i could get rid of the error that i was receiving regarding to dont have permissions. I have tried to search and add user from an alternate computer, but cant find it. for e.g. desktop has a user named street and without a password and laptop has user named street without a password. i had to set perimissions to everyone, cuz by default the permission on the desktop was for street, if i searched for street user on laptop, it couldnt find. any idea how to search or set permission for a specific user who's on the other computer?

First check these settings on both machines. Make sure they both look like this. Make sure that both machines are using the same workgroup name. Both machines need to use a different machine name or they won't show up. I'm not sure if you are using workgroup or public file sharing so I showed both windows.



make sure the firewall is turn off. and did you make "domain" or just "workgroup"

well, i have the same settings as you showed under home network, i have disabled everything under public window/drop down. i havent created any domain just only workgroup. but still somehow i have to give permission to "everyone" user, rather then a specific user from either of the computer. the thing is i have only once user on each computer, both the user names are same, but there's no password, apart from that, yes they are under one workgroup, thats the default workgroup. when i search for user's under permission, i still cant see the same user name from either computer. ie its like this desktop has user name lucky and no password and laptop also has user name lucky and no password, however, when im trying to give rights/permission, i would like to see user name desktop\lucky from laptop and goes same with desktop as well. cuz i belive anybody who enter's my network if has the same default workgroup, then they might access my local disk drive's so i would love to share them only with the specific user thats me rather then everyone.

The only way to make that work is to create another user account on both machines then share through those names. You will only have the choice of "Everyone" unless you do that.

The following procedure is required in order to give you those sharing options.
Tim Stitt wrote this up awhile back.

When the users connect, you need to have password sharing enabled (i.e. they must put in a password to enter the shared computer (they can always save this so they need not enter it next time). You now need 2 local users on the Windows 7 computer, e.g. call them user1 and user2 with their own respective passwords. Don't make them ADMIN users.

Note that you also need to remap the drives and use these logins and passwords for the drive mapping.

Now user1 has access to everything, so on the outside folder give them complete access (or read only as you desire, including access to the special folder inside). Repeat this action for user2. Now go to the special folder that you only want user1 to have access to. right click on it and select properties/security. On the permissions tab, have a look and write down the current permission settings (this is an important reducndancy step should something you do fail later). Now look for a tickbox to inherit parent permissions and untick this. Now give permissions only to those users that you want to access this folder. Be aware that you probably need SYSTEM and CREATOR OWNER on there.

Like all good plans, switch user to user1 on the Windows 7 box and test that they can locally access what they are supposed to. Repeat with User2. Now remap the drives with the new passwords and give the passwords out to the users.

This should fix your issue.

Chev65 thatkyou for your reply, but the solution that you provided is for local users (same computer). i bealive i have failed to make you understand the exact option that im looking for, i really appologize tough, what exactly im looking for is, see in permissions there are list of users e.g. users that are on the computer, there's also another user which is everyone. now the thing is, if we select everyone, anybody out in my neighborhood, who has mast password can come in and check the stuff that i have... so what if i want to give a permission to a local user who is on a network which is on the other pc, rather then just everyone. now the the thing is secondary pc is also mine, has the same user name and and no password. so 1 of my pc is named as desktop\user 1 and the 2nd is laptop\user 1, so when im giving permissions it shows only users on desktop if im doing from desktop or laptop if im doing from laptop. e.g. desktop\user 1, i want it to show as laptop\user1 in permission.
