Hi all,
OK, here is my query:
1: I have a PC with Windows 7 64-bit and a generic C-Media 7.1 discrete sound card.
2: I have a set of Turando analogue 5.1 speakers connected with three (3) analogue cables to the sound card, giving me my 5.1 surround sound capability.

2: I have my TV plugged into the PC via HDMI cable and a single analog cable from TV speaker out to C-Media sound card line-in.
3: My settings on the C-Media control panel is as follows: input= 2 channel, output is analogue 5.1. This all works perfectly for TV and 2 channel shows played on the PC. If I play something from the PC with 6 channels, like a movie, then I simply change the C-Media setting for input to 6 channel and all works great, again.
My query is as follows: As long as I leave the Windows 7 Sound settings to 2 channel instead of 5.1, all the above work reasonably well. However, as soon as I change the Windows 7 sound setting to 5.1 then things go haywire and the TV, for instance only plays the front speakers of my sound system. Can anyone perhaps shed light onto why this might be?

Thanking you.

When you say TV, is that the cable box or something like that? HDMI for a TV would be an input, not an output to a computer. A cable box, Blu-ray player, Roku, etc are outputs.

HDMI already provides audio so no need for an extra audio cable.

What exactly is HDMI plugged into? If it is TV then the TV is providing HDMI out. Are you using the TV to watch on your computer or the TV as a monitor? What kind of TV?

Typically you'd click the speaker icon and chose your device for playback or recording. If its source is for HDMI then you'd pick HDMI as the source.

Hi thanks for the reply. Firstly I did update my post in that I found the reason why things were changing but in reply to your question my TV does not support HDMI sound out it is plugged into the HDMI port on my video card but again the TV itself does not support HDMI sound out. I know this from the manual and from a reply on another forum. But bottom line is I have solved the issue and thank you for your reply.

If your TV has multiple HDMI sockets, they could have different uses. My Panasonic TV has 4.
