Associating a File Type - Just isn't working

I'm having problems trying to get PSD files to be associated with Photoshop. I've done all the typical things you would have to do in Windows7 to associate programs with file types. I've searched for the answer but only found everything that I have already tried.

Did you try the "Open with" route and chose a default program there?

I tried that, Photoshop doesn't show up after selecting it.

You should be able to do step 3 in the tutorial below for "Open with" to manually "Browse" to and select the EXE file of Photoshop.

Everything that was listed in that tutorial I had already tried and it didn't work.

Which version of photoshop is it? Also is it the same problem with other file types like jpg? Lastly, besides the double click association are you able to or not able to drag and drop a PSD onto an open photoshop?

There is some subtle change in DDE I've noticed that prevents some programs from opening files via association or even drag and drop. I.e. Visual studio even WITH the updates. I believe that CS5 works fine with Windows 7 but earlier versions may exhibit the problem.

If the answer to all the questions at the top are "no", and your on an older version, then it may not be fixable without an update to photoshop.

Photoshop CS5, other files types are associated with Windows Photo Viewer. I'm able to drag and drop a PSD into photoshop.

Ok, try this:

Start Orb -> Default Programs

Click "Set your default programs"

<wait...>

Click on the "Windows Photo Viewer" when it shows up in the list.

Click "Choose Defaults for this program"

If you see ".psd" files listed, uncheck it.

Close everything then re-assiciate PSD files with photoshop and see if it sticks...

Hmm...sorry about that, runs perfectly for me. Fixed a problem I had with some associations.

NOTE!!This runs the 32bit Photoshop.exe as default in a 64bit system (blame the plug-ins I use).

I tried that, Windows Photo Viewer was not associated with Photoshop Files, besides it can't be it doesn't understand PSD files !

I also tried the program in the link you suggested, it only works with specific file types no mention of PSD.

Fimble - I don't know how your registry helps me ?!?!?
