My Asus EeePC 1018p, which is about 3 years old, recently had a hard drive failure . ASUS stopped supplying the system recovery CDs with the net books a few years ago. Therefore i don't have what I need.
I have since replaced the hard drive and contacted ASUS. They have been rather useless and I can't find where to get the recovery CDs. Is there anywhere I can download or buy the disks? Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated!

Which OS was installed and do you have a COA sticker on the bottom with a product key. If yes, you can download a Windows 7 iso from here (assuming the key on the COA sticker is Windows 7). Just make sure you download the version that corresponds to the key - e.g. Home Premium.

If it is one of those Starter systems, then you are out of luck. There you can only borrow an installation CD from someone.

I installed Win 8.1 Pro on my 5 year old Acer Aspire One netbook and it runs very nicely there. It should run even better on your Asus EeePC 1018p since it has a newer Atom processor and more RAM. My netbook came with XP and I believe it runs Win 8.1 better than it ran XP.

One issue you would encounter is that Metro Apps require a minimum of 1024x768 and many netbooks (yours included) have a fixed resolution of 1024x600. There is a registry tweak you can do to allow you to set the resolution to 1024x768. Here's a link on how to do that: How to Run Modern Windows 8 Apps on a Netbook

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I liked Windows 7 Starter, which is what comes installed. ASUS has been absolutely HORRIBLE in this matter. They have hung up on my multiple times and canceled the chat multiple times. I finally got that they don't even sell the recovery CD for my model anymore. I think I'll either upgrade to a full size laptop or install Linux. Thanks to all who helped.

The Asus suppor behavior is strange. I bought an Asus Transformer last month and had to call their support line a few times. They were always immediately available (no long wait on the line), very helpful and knowledgeable. Too bad you had such a horrible experience.

I would write a letter to the CEO of Asus. I have done that once with Sony and believe me, I got instant action.
