Hi.
i've recently decide to update all of my PC components , and stuck on motherboard bios.
can you help me with it ?
i've red the manuals , and it says to download "asus update utility" on their site , but when im choosing "windows 7 64" and downloading the utility it says that i should download 64 bit application .
so is there any other way to update my bios ? or... im lost a bit

I suggest using the EZ Flash utility, rather than updating the BIOS from within Windows. It's invoked from within the BIOS setup. RTFM. (If you've mislaid the manual, it's available for download from support.asus.com.)

No download required, other than the BIOS file itself.

I think that EZ Flash is safer than Windows. It may be as good as flashing from DOS.

Why do you think you need to update the bios ? If it`s working fine I would leave it alone. What are the updates in the new bios ? Do you need them ?

i think it will have better support for my video card because it has been low fps rate lately in games .
and i think that my video card release date is much more late then the motherboard .
because my specs is :
16 GB ram (1333)
580 GTX overcclocked ver
and phenom II cpu ( 6 cores X 3.33)
harddisc 500 gb 7600 rpm .

just an example , i've downloaded NFS MW ( the latest game) and half game it goes 60 fps (like in fields and highways) ,and half goes down almost to 20 :\ ( in town with a lot of objects )
and i dont think that my video card is not supposed to support the game with full graphics and steady fps around 40 at least .

Does the newer BIOS specifically state it has more support for your GPU? If not, I'd leave it alone, newer is not always better.
I would suggest you get some USB flash drives, very handy items.

Try these steps to install only the graphics driver.

1.Download the preferred driver and save it to the desktop.
2.Double click the installer and you will see a screen where it will be extracted to, change that to your desktop.
3.Open Device Manager through Control Panel.
4.Expand Display adapters and right click the name for yours and choose Update Driver\Browse my Computer. Select the driver folder you just saved on the desktop. Click Next.
5. Your system should say "Windows has successfully updated your driver software".

If you get a window saying you already have the most current driver, go back to step 4 and choose Uninstall Driver software instead. Then restart from step 3.

yeah , i will , it's just that i'm using portable HD , the only downside is that i can't make it bootable everytime i need it .

____

and , i'll do your "tutorial" right now , but i gotta ask a question . you say that sometimes i need to completely delete drivers and install again , so it will take a "real" effect ?
because nvidia utility says it's up to date ...

I also believe that if a bios or driver update doesn't address a problem you are having leave them alone. Newer is not always better. Most update are put out to address a problem some people are having. If you are not having that problem you don't necessarily need those updates.

i did it the first time you told me to .
first time ive deleted the driver and installed it again ( but the installation process was from nvidia install.exe , because when i've uninstalled the graphic driver there was no more "display adapters" option , so i had no other option)
anyway , did it again right now , as you said , windows said that it's up to date , so i've choose the " let me pick from the list of drivers on my pc " , and there was 3 options , onaboard driver , 8 ver nvidia and 9 ver nvidia , so i chose the latest and installed it . after the installation it just said that it was successful . i restarted the pc again and nothing changed .
in a matter of fact i think now it's even slower on furmark .

does it mean that i need a flash stick memory (make it bootable and etc)?
because i dont have one .

The thread has moved on, but I believe tha EZ Flash can read a BIOS file from any drive that is formatted FAT32. (Not NTFS.) The drive doesn't need to be bootable.

I think that one of the options would be a CD, if that's more convenient for you.

I suggest getting a flash drive, though. I bought a couple of low-end 8GB USB drives yesterday for $7US each.

Bob why do you think flashing BIOS from stick is safer than from Windows? I would have thought the opposite. It's certainly how most OEM's want it done since most dont' provide any other method.

Not saying I disagree here, because I need more information. But I've seen it before and wanted to ask this time.

Greg, it's just safer to flash BIOS from within BIOS with either a stick or CD. The windows utilities can corrupt it at times, though rare. A botched BIOS flash would mean either a new board or if available a new BIOS chip, which are available for some boards nowadays.

Some new ASUS boards have a feature to flash BIOS/UEFI by simply plugging in a stick containing the BIOS file to a special USB port and pressing a button for 5-10 seconds. No drives needed even.
