I bought a CD-ROM with 6 Atari arcade games.

Atari - Atari Arcade Hits
Or
Amazon.com: Atari Arcade Hits #1 (Jewel Case): Video Games

They are just like I remember from the old Atari 800 which used cartridges. The 800 was quite similar to the arcade versions, unlike the blocky 2600 version.

I first tried them on a Windows XP PC & they played. It says you can play them from the disc which I did.

I then tried them on two Win7 Ultimate PCs & also played from the disc. In fact the setup routine did not work so I could not install the games.

The short story - eventually I got all 6 games to play in Windows 7. But it's really hit or miss when/if they'll work. Missile Command works all the time. Centipede works maybe 20% of the time. And the others maybe 5% of the time. You just have to keep trying & trying. I'm trying to find some secret combination of key presses that might improve the odds to get the games to work but so far no luck. My next step is copying the files to the HDD to see if this improves the odds of getting things to work. I did try the compatibility mode & used the recommended mode (XP SP2) but that didn't seem to affect anything. I'll have to try some others.

I just don't know why a game will load & run sometimes but not others.

Atari.com is where I first the CD-ROM. However I bought it from Amazon because it was cheaper.

Since the games can be played from the CD-ROM, which I did, I'm curious where the high scores are saved. I never set up any Atari folder on my PC & could not find anything that resembled a file or directory for this.

I played a few more games & got some new high scores & my old high scores from yesterday were still listed. IOW they are being saved somewhere.

I looked & searched all over. I checked all the folder dates on 9-1-2012 after I saved some high scores & no folders showed a date of 9-1-2012. I did this today & the same thing, no folder dates have been updated.

This is not a high priority item but I am curious where the data is.

Update:
If I turn off the Cabinet Art most of the games will load & run almost all the time, except Pong. Asteroids & Tempest also expand to fill more of the screen. However this causes Centipede's controls to lag a bit which makes the game difficult to play.
