ATI Mobility Radeon x1300 Driver Download/Install Error

I run W7 64-bit on an acer laptop with a x1300 mobility radeon card. I have never managed to make the 3D card work optimally in W7. ( RC7100)
The status was this:

-full resolution
-no video problem (regular avi, mpg video )
-3D acceleration problem, -the acceleration would never work in fullscreen apps, there would be image, but with an ultra-frequent flickering between application-image and just black.

However they work in windowed mode. (As for example quake live)

Reading woger's post I thought I would give the mod-tool from driverheaven a go. The mod and installation of ati drivers worked but I have the same problem. I used the latest catalyst 8.12. drivers

Maybe I should have used some other drivers?
Woger: You mention two different drivers, which did you end up using ?
( maybe I should try the 7.11 nighthawk mentioned)

Have anyone had the same problem?

I have x1250 ATI graphic card, but the drivers for it are identical as for x1200 or x1300 models.

I checked out the site you (Creer) referred to and tested it..

---Before doing this I ran into a problem with the catalyst package making it impossible to install any drivers. (it just got stuck somewhere in the installation no matter which driver version it was. -I have quite a few on the drive now ) ---

I attempted earlier to install the drivers manually, but unsuccessfully. I didn't realize W7 could not distinguish which drivers were x64 or not!

Reading the post helped in that I saw you needed the exact folder to manually install.

The same problem I mentioned earlier with screen flicker in full screen 3d remains though..

I used the catalyst 8.12 this time around. Could there be a difference with the legacy 9.8 drivers?


My experience so far with ATI drivers seem to be they work or they do not.
-Maybe I will try installing the 9.8 too just for the hell of it and to make sure I have tried everything.

now i have installed the driver "9-3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu" from Guru3D.com.
But so far I didn't test much programs.
What is screen flicker? Maybe I can install this program and test something?

When I bought a new hard drive for the same computer by the way
I had a lot of problems and i guess i still do even installing XP again
I have learned to deal with it, but the only resolution that works is the highest one
anything else is a fuzzy very bad quality


I went and installed 7
I'm not certain but I believe I have those aero effects
I'm not sure what worked really
It downloaded a driver but it was dated from sept 09
I used the ones recently past 2 weeks were updated
I did use that website above but I don't know if I had to

Ati X1300 Working on Windows 7



Hello!! I finally managed to make my problem go away !!

The driver I used was

---9-3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu-[Guru3D.com]----

from guru 3d.com of course.

If anybody else (poor souls out there like me) has a problem with SCREEN FLICKER IN FULLSCREEN 3D ON W7 WITH ATI X1300 mobile radeon this should work!

First I ran "driversweeper" which is a downloadable exe app from 3d guru which cleans out all remains of older drivers. ( just run the exe, check "ati" and click clean)

Then I ran the mobility modder on said drivers (mobility modder and installation is described earlier in this thread, it looks complicated at first but is really simple)

then I did a simple manual install of the driver (CH_76829.msi) using windows device manager. And now it finally works. Maybe it is possible to use older or newer drivers but this is the first that has worked in my case. If anyone else has the same problem with x1200 or x1250 I hope this can be helpful for you. I usually never follow up posts like this but this has been a real skull-tearer.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 and Windows 7

When I installed Windows 7 on my Acer TravelMate 6460 laptop (which had been running on Windows XP) it did not recognise the ATI card and instead it saw a Generic PnP Monitor on a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

Doing some digging around the web and on this forum I saw that, while no Windows 7 driver will be released by ATI for the Mobility Radeon X1300, the Vista driver should work, albeit without access to some Win 7-specific graphics features.

Has anyone been able to make it work?

I downloaded a Vista graphics driver (VGA_ATI_8.31.100.3_VistaX64) from the Acer website. This appeared to install and said the installation was complete. The installation program said the driver would be installed at C:/program files/ATI Technologies.

An 'AST Technologies' directory was created, but there was nothing in it. A separate 'ATI' directory was also created, with a subdirectory called CIM with very little data in it. That subdirectory had two further subdirectories: Config and Reports.

The Reports folder had a log of the installation, and its Error Messages section contained dozens of entries that all said 'Catalyst® Install Manager could not find path'.

I haven't tried it yet but I saw suggested on this forum that the Vista legacy driver could be obtained from AMD's Catalyst Display Driver site here. Has anyone tried these, and are they generic enough that they would work on a particular model of laptop?

Also, here are two drivers there, - the Catalyst Software Suite and WDM Integrated Driver. I have no idea which would be the best to try. The first is much bigger than the Vista driver I got from the Acer website and the other is much smaller.

Also - the website mentioned above is run by AMD. Are their drivers specific to computers with AMD processors? My machine has an Intel Core 2 T7200 2.0Mhz processor.

I know how frustrating this can be so here is what I know:

It appears that you may not have read this thread from beginning to end

What you have probably gathered is that making the X1300 work on w7 is not that easy especially since the series is basically not receiving any updates.

I will try to answer some of your questions. (please note that altough my data knowledge is above average I am no expert)

Yes I did and I think some other on this forum did too. If you read this post from beginning to end you will see how.

Breakdown:

-download and extract the 9.3 legacy 64 drivers from guru 3d
-use the mobility modder tool before attempting to install the driver
-use the driversweeper utilty from guru 3d to clean your machine out of old ATI stuff.
-install the drivers from the extracted and modded "lh6a" folder, the "CH_76829.msi" (for 64 bit OS) drivers.

All the links and details are described earlier in this thread.

No idea. I've tried many drivers and none worked for me except the one I mention. That is, some appeared to work in normal 2d windows operation, but when running fullscreen 3D it would not work at all. (this only applies to w7, in vista and XP i have had no problem with this card, altough people keep repeating that if it works in vista it should work in 7)

Other things: Which folders appear are not important you just need to find that driver and get it installed. You don't need the catalyst software suite either but some people think it's neat. I think it is completely useless (IMHO). -The X1300 is a crappy card so tweaking around is not gonna bring about any big fireworks.
You're not going to need or use the WMD driver as far as I know. AMD fused with ATI and owns them but ATI is still manufacturing and branding the video cards , which processor you have is irrelevant.

Hi kokosbolle. That looks like useful information and I really appreciate the work put into it. However I still have concerns, as described below.

I've also been looking at a Microsoft Technet forum, where they are suggesting a different approach, which is to update the X1300 driver with the latest 'legacy' driver from ATI, which is 9-11_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe (at ATI Catalyst? Legacy Display Driver)

This thread is at Hibernate issue - cause by ATI Radeon X1200 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM) driver. My issues are towards the bottom of the thread.

Is is 9-11_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe just an update on the '9.3 legacy 64 drivers from guru 3d' you talk about? And if it is an update, do I still need to do these things you mention:

“-use the mobility modder tool before attempting to install the driver
“-use the driversweeper utilty from guru 3d to clean your machine out of old ATI stuff.
“-install the drivers from the extracted and modded "lh6a" folder, the "CH_76829.msi" (for 64 bit OS) drivers.”

The problem I see with the social.technet.microsoft.com/Forum route – and it could be a problem with what you are suggesting also – is that, for some reason, my device manager is not seeing the card as an X1300. Instead, it is seeing it as 'Generic PnP Monitor', which it says is working properly. (Unfortunately it doesn’t give the correct resolution for my screen.)

To be honest, I'm really confused. I have two different sets of advice, and a display adaptor that is not even being recognised as being an ATI device.

One the face of it, the Microsoft tech forum solution looks much less complicated than your solution, but I don’t care which I use, as long as it works. At the moment I can’t go online on the laptop concerned, because I foolishly agreed, when installing Win7, that it could go online for validation automatically after three days. As I am installing an OEM version, I don’t want to let it do that until I know Win7 is going to work properly on the laptop. As soon as it validates, it will be tied to that particular laptop forever.

I also have an Acer Travelmate 6460 (6463WLMi) and had some problems when installing Win7 (you can read below). And also, after installing the ATI card wasn't recognized as a Radeon X1300 but only as Generic PnP Monitor on a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter with a resolution of 1024x768 (or so).

And now, the card is recognized as ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 and the max. resolution is 1280x800.

In my opinion using the modder tool isn't very difficult.
- download and install it
- download the display driver
- start installing the display driver and stop it, when it is unpacked in c:\ATI\support ...
- start the modding tool and use as described on the homepage
- start installing ATI driver from the directory as described
- restart the notebook and be happy with using the ATI Graphics Card with a good resolution.

On my notebook first I installed Win7 64-bit, later I installed Win7 32-bit. I tried to install different versions of display driver, but some I couldn't install.
The best result was using ATI Catalyst 9.3 (for example from guru3d). Choose the right version (32- od 64bit) depending on your installed OS.

I’d really hate to go back to XP – at least to the horribly kludged version of XP that Acer provided. Windows 7 runs like greased lightning compared with Acer’s XP.

I won’t be able to get to my laptop to try the things you and kokosbolle have suggested for at least another 24 hours, so here is another question:

You say your card is now recognized as ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 with a max. resolution of 1280x800. That is way below the native resolution for the screen 6460’s screen, which is 1680 x 1050. 1280x800 is pretty low, but at least the proportions are the same. Does it look any good? Surely the graphics must look inferior – the 1680 x 1050 resolution does make pictures look really great. Actually I wouldn’t mind the screen resolution being a little bit lower, because the very fine res can make text hard to read. But at least the fine resolution puts a fair bit on the screen when I use the laptop for page layout.

I’ve put 32-bit Win7 on the machine. I ran a 64 bit RC1 version on my office desktop for a long time and got frustrated that it refused to load an important 16 bit legacy application. You can’t use the compatibility thing if it won’t even start to install an app. I just installed the final Win7 version on that machine and I went back to 32 bit – my long lost app now works!

Frostmourne – thanks for the links to your tutorials. They are both excellent.

You seem to be surprised that I see no advantage in putting 64 bit Windows on my Travelmate 6460.

I see little point in running 64-bit Windows because the Travelmate 6460 is getting behind the 8-ball now in terms of processing power – 2.0Ghz. I can't see myself wanting to use it for anything that would benefit from more than the 4Gb of RAM that I can access in a 32 bit system. Right now I have 2x1Gb RAM modules and to even go to 4Gb would mean tossing both existing modules out and starting again. Not worth spending the money when things are running fine with 2Gb. (At least they were in XP. I'll have to see how it performs with Win7 once I start pushing things.) When I need to do especially grunty work, I use my desktop, which has a quad processor.

And the ability to run the legacy 16 bit app is important to me on both machines.

Right now there are damn-all applications that demand 64-bit – certainly no applications that I need. Sure, I could run my Adobe Creative Suite apps faster with 64 bit, but I'd have to pay quite a bit of money to upgrade to new versions. Meanwhile, my 32-bit Adobe apps run really well on my desktop and OK on the laptop.

So for me there are no real advantages in going 64-bit on my Travelmate. It can feel nice to be at the cutting-edge, but been there, done that for six months with Win7 RC1 on my desktop. The thrill didn't last.

By the time there are real advantages in using a 64 bit OS on an underpowered laptop, I'll have upgraded to a new machine.

And now my Travelmate 6460 is sorted too! And even better, it is giving the native screen resolution of 1680x1050 as opposed to the maximum resolution you you say you are getting, of 1280x800. (I wonder why that is?)

I wasn't going to able to do this straight away, but I got out of an after-work function and did the video fix instead.

Brilliant. Thanks to you guys, and especially to the smart cookies who wrote the ATI Mobility Modder.

Incidentally, another good thing about having Windows 7 on the laptop is that I can now use my bluetooth mouse again. It stopped working 18 months ago and nothing I could do, short of reinstalling Windfows XP, would make it work again.

I spoke too soon, claiming success for my x1300 driver fix on my TravelMate 6460, using the 9.3 legacy 64 drivers from guru 3d, modified by Modder before final installation.

While my initial impression was that my problems were over, I soon noticed strange things which were different from other display glitches that have been mentioned in this thread.

My two Mozilla products, Firefox and Thunderbird, displayed greatly enlarged. It was as though they were running at 800x600 or even lower. No such problem with Internet Explorer, which displayed correctly.

I don’t have many other apps on the computer yet to test them. Skype was fine. I looked at a few apps that came with Windows 7 and they were OK.

I installed Google Earth and immediately ran into trouble. It complained that my display was less than 1024x768, and it did display greatly enlarged, like Firefox.

It seems paradoxical to me, but my video driver seems to provide 1680x1050 for some programs and 800x600 or less for others. Does anyone have an idea what’s happening and if it is possible to fix it?

One step I didn’t take in the process was run driversweeper before anything else. This was mentioned by kokosbolle, but not by Woger, who has the same model laptop as me. Woger just used Modder. But like me, his X1300 adapters had not even been recognised in the Win7 installation process, so only generic drivers had been installed initially – so presumably there would have been no ATI stuff to clean up. (But could there have been a remnant of it from the original XP installation?)

What would happen if I used the 9-11_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe driver that was mentioned at the Microsoft Techforum and gave it the same treatment with Modder that I gave to the 9.3 legacy 64 drivers from guru 3d?

I will run driversweeper before any future driver reinstallations.

First off, just for the record I also have an acer travelmate 6463 running 1680x1050 with the 9.3 driver installed. altough my profile info says otherwise.

Have you tried reinstalling firefox and thunderbird?

You mention you installed google earth which i think is a 3d app . Have you tried running any other windowed and/or fullscreen 3d applications? for troubleshooting?

I have not had a problem with my computer like the one you describe.

-I do however have a problem that my laptopscreen cannot stretch the image more than the actual resolution, meaning, if I run an app in 1024x768 I will see this image as a cutout in my laptop screen displaying the actual resolution pixel by pixel, a smaller image than the fullscreen. This is not a priority concern for me because I usually hook up my acer to an ext. screen which stretch the image for the computer.

As for the driver you mention I don't know.

If you go to display settings in w7 and click advanded options and open the display tab, does it say generic pnp monitor?
