Alright. I've found threads amongst threads about this but none of their solutions have worked for me. The surround sound has worked once in the past but ever since I reinstalled the OS a good while ago I haven't had surround sound out of the HDMI port since. It displays video just fine but when I go into the sound settings it just gives me the option for stereo.

What're some other common things to try to get this to work?

I've disabled all the integrated sound and integrated HDMI stuff in BIOS already as well so everything is solely relying on the ATI 4550 PCIe card.

I had an HD4550 video card. You don't have to disable the regular PC's audio. First, install the lastest drivers for the card from ATI (including the Catalyst Control Center) as it has the sound drivers for the built in (on the Video board) audio. Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally Sound. In the Playback section, select the ATI HDMI as the default playback device.

After I install the latest from ATI I didn't have the ATI HDMI default playback option.

Did you reboot the PC after installing the new drivers?

HERE is an older driver (10.1) for Win 7 64 bit. I know this one works OK.

I did and again and again after I tried uninstalling the old drivers and installing the new ones. But that driver is just for video and also I'm running Vista x32 not Win7 x64.

I just went to that link anyways and downloaded the drivers, when I went to install they said everything is already installed and update to date.

Oh, Vista. This is a Win 7 forum and I assumed you had Windows 7. There is a different forum for Vista.

I've always used my HD4850 with Win 7, 64 bit. I've never tried it in Vista.

Well. I used to have the HD4550 running on Win7 x64 but the surround sound didn't work there either.. and back when it was on Vista it did work.. so I returned it to Vista and ever since then it didn't work anymore.. I imagine it'd be the same issues either way.

I'm considering just doing a bulk convert of all my movies and say screw it and get an AppleTV or something and stream it from the HTPC.
