ATI Radeon HD 5870 Driver problems

I have been having problems with my ATI Radeon HD 5870, here is a brief summary of what happened:

A few months ago a bought a new PC with a bunch of really cool stuff in it, one of them was a graphics card called "ATI Radeon HD 5870". I recently bought the AVATAR movie on dvd and wanted to watch it on the pc, so I incerted the disc and opened it up in Windows Media Player and I got a message saying:

"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because it is not possible to turn on analog copy protection on the output display. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."

So I went to the graphics card website and downloaded the new Driver for the Graphics card and it downloaded and installed, but after it installed I went over to Devic manager looked up the device and in the Device stus box it says:

"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"

I have downloaded this driver countless times from different websites and using different internet providers and I always get the same damn message.

Also heres my system spec:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
AMD phenom 2 X4 965 Processor
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870

Basically, its saying that the ATI Drivers are not digitally signed and the only way to combat this, is to press f8 every time you start your computer or, you could reinstall Widows 7 with the video drivers already on. Found that out here:

A couple of issues going on here I think.

1. WMP will need codec to play Movie DVDs; suggest you download one of the free players to watch the movies.

2. You have a driver conflict with the HD5870.

a. Download "Driver Sweeper", its free and clean out all the ATI drivers.

b. Download and install the new ATI Catalyst 10.4 WHQL Windows 7 | Vista 64-bit.


Hopefully this will solve the problem. The HD5870 is a beast of a card, I run a couple of them, they are great.

Thanks for the information, I downloaded the files and the Drive Sweeper is great but the Drivers didnt work.
It asked me to reboot my pc, when it re-booted a message popped up sayingL:
" No ATI driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware."
I went in Device manager and under the "general" tab in the Device Status window it says:
"Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)"
Also the strange thing is, now in the Digital Signer under the "Driver tab" it actually says "Not digitally signed", where as before it would have a random company name like "AMD" or ATI etc

Heres a picture of when i try and open the file, Note: it says, This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher.

Next suggestion is to go back into device manager and right click on the 5870 and select uninstall; after the uninstall, reboot and let windows find it and select the search for update and let windows update find the driver.

I think I would use driver sweeper first to clean out all the ATI stuff.

Thanks very much, this worked perfectly. Now I can go back to playing Crysis and Halo 2.

For anyone else who runs into this problem, do exactly what Kipper said.
1. install driver sweeper and anylise and clean your entire ATI files.
2. Control Panel> Device Manager> Display Adapters> ATI Radeon Hd****.
3. Right click it and uninstall, make sure you check the box which says "Delete the driver software for this device".
4. Restart your computer, even if there is no prompt saying reboot system etc.
5. A box should appear saying something like "installing device", let it install the driver.

Hope this tut helped anyone else with this problem.

I have that gfx too and same issue. Reasons are poor drivers and lame support that still didn't fix them. I didn't have problems with original drivers that came with gfx but since update it happen they actually made them worse.

And theres nothing you can do about it except a small workaround that will have negative effects. So I don't recommend it unless you are just about to watch a dvd. When you finish watching dvd best is to change it back.

Workaround:

start->control panel->display->advanced->troubleshoot

Then set hardware acceleration slider from full two steps lower (to 3/5)

Disable all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct drawing problems.

Now you are able to run dvd without crashing but that's NOT a solution its a workaround that will cause you other problems such as mouse cursor blinking and so on so be sure to move slider back to full if you are not watching dvds.

It so sad that such awesome gfx card have such bad drivers. And thats not my first ati card that have bugs in drivers. Check this out

Ok now you can read if you like about another issue with another gfx that I had on laptop its bit offtopic but on other hand problem is same: the drivers



Before I bought this awesome pc I only had a laptop with radeon hd3200 - I still own that piece of shit. That laptop always had and still have 2d performance issues (scrolling lag in firefox). Would you believe that after 2 years they still didn't fix that issue. In fact they didn't even release a new driver in last two years which is pathetic. they just left xp users with that gfx card, suffer browsing lag for time being. So laptop is useless, because I surf 75% of all time when I'm on computer!
Well they fixed that bug (after huge demand of lots of people) for desktop version of that gfx card, but not for laptop version. So to not get so mad that you will about smash the laptop every time you use it, you must workaround it and its much like desktop radeon hd 5870. In this case I keep that workaround on because It's 2d performance issue and unless if you play 3d games you will face it when browsing with firefox or other applications such video capture. I moved the hardware acceleration one step off the full and after that no more scrolling problems, but you will get cursor blinking when you will mouseover a playing movie or other advanced animations/windowed games. Another workaround is to plug to laptop a monitor and to extend desktop over it that will bypass the bug but its not functional since who the hell is going to look on desktop in such situation: 1st half in on small lcd of laptop another is on bigger screen like wtf? You can of course after plugging in monitor just unplug it and scrolling will work bugless until you restart windows. I actually bought this big lcd because of that to use it with that laptop. I wanted it to be first part of desktop where everything is on so I could just close laptop and bypass the bug. But that never happen since you cant set it as primary monitor so then I used it instead laptop screen and plugged into an keyboard then I put laptop under table and wow It was like a real PC but also loud one (that annoying fan makes alot noise) Anyway that didn't solve 2d perfromace bug so I had to stick to another workaround that blinks cursor, until I bought this pc I'm on it, but damn now I have same problem but not with 2d performance. Now its DVD playback, so I wonder what is going to be wrong with next ati gfx that I will buy in future?

Been having this problem since Christmas 2010, even the company that built it didn't have a clue what to do, replaced the graphic card, then 2 weeks later told me the thing was full of trojans and viruses, (Bull....!) and reset the computer to original factory settings (No OS). Did a clean start but was loath to load the graphic card drivers because that was when the problems started. About an hour ago I found the following website, downloaded the WHQL 11 - 10 drivers; problem solved, I admit to dancing round the room, I now have a graphic card rating of 7.7 after 10 months of 1.0. Hope this helps other frustrated people who are ready to take a sledgehammer to their machines

HI, i recently had a problem with my ATI Radeon HD 5970 2G(One exactly

HI, i recently had a problem with my ATI Radeon HD 5970 2G(One exactly like this one) because my PC was locking up/freeze up shortly after installing the drivers for the card and I couldn't figure out what was the problem. I know my PC is overclock a little bit so I tried turning down the clock speed little bit to see if it would fix the problem but... Nope!.. tried using stock clock speed.. Nope!. Tried taking apart the card and giving it a good cleaning with new thermal paste (Loving the vapor chamber) and still the problem persist... tried cleaning the contacts on the PCI-E PCB, Resetting the cmos and the motherboard,different drivers but no signs of improvement. So a week and a half ago I decided to use a different version of windows to see if I would get the same problem. So I tried windows 8.1 just because I didn't really want to go too far back on the Os's and you know what... It's working so far!!!. temps are ok and i don't notice any signs of problems other wise, So I hope this helps anyone else that has the same card and is having the same problem.
