I've been getting this BSOD only after coldboots (first time powering on the machine in a few hours; usually over night). The display driver crashes several times and then BSOD. After the first BSOD however, I can reboot my pc as much as I want and no BSOD.

What I've Tried;
  • Uninstalling the drivers in safe mode and then reinstalling them
  • Tried all kinds of different driver versions
  • Manually extracting the atikmpag.sys and atikmdag.sys files
  • Formatting my SSD and completely reinstalling windows
  • Swapped motherboards
  • Put the cards in individually (I have 2x 6870s one of which i know definitely works)
  • Bought a new PSU

Symptoms(?):
Crashes on Cold boot
Moderately Loud "revving up" sound on boot and then dying down as it crashes and settles to be no longer crashing
LED on my fan flickering (not connected to fan controller)
Stammer of the Windows 7 logo on startup (animation stops midway and then continues)
Also my PC will not resume from sleep or hibernation, it either hangs or BSOD

I've tried everything I can think of, Help! :( I've attached a dump file.

Hello and welcome PCKTWTCH mate with that atikmpag you mentioned I am assuming you uninstalled the CCC and left just the driver installed?

The other thing you do mention too is that you know that "one" of the cards work so have you tried it with just one at a time in/ and what are the temps on those cards.

Now I don't know how old the machine and especially the cards are but maybe cleaning the contacts and slots may help. Sounds rather simplistic but crud and sut do clog those even though they are installed.
SLOT CLEANING
Now as for the slots to clean them use a strip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them off hold a piece of thin lint free cloth over the end dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin with before an injection) is good and GENTLY swipe along the slots.
This can also be done for the GPU slot/s and also the contacts of the sticks or cards - not the stick but some lint free cloth of course. See my pic for the sick but please be very gentle doing it if you are in any doubt - please ask before doing it but I use this all the time and have yet to damage anything.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Could have sworn id put the cards in separately before and they had both not worked but I did it yesterday and one worked perfect and the other would not even let me boot into windows without blue screening so I'm not sure what's wrong with the card bit that's definitely the problem:)

Ok mate now one thing that springs to mind is of course heat and I am wondering if all that is needed is to replace / renew the thermal compound - it isn't a difficult job but as usual make sure you do not apply too much and also reattaching the cooler don't over tighten the retaining fittings.

That said it might be something more serious and it might be a idea while you have it apart to check out the state of the caps on the board - the ones you can see that is, and any signs of the printed circuit board having been very hot (scorched) .

The other possible issue is you have two different cards in the machine - something I would avoid if possible to give me max performance but that is really a budget item eh?
