Solved AutoPlay - Not Working With External Hard Drives?

Hi Folks,

An extremely annoying new problem with Auto Play in Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit). When I turn on my BlacX External Station (two hard drives), auto play doesn't work!?

I've re-set to default, etc.

Any suggestions on how to fix this darn thing!

Hi Dave,

I tried a number of different suggestions to fix the Auto Play for plug-in devices (external hard drives, USB flash, etc.)

1. System File Checker - sfc /scannow - nothing found.
2. net start shellhwdetection - didn't do anything.
3. I checked the registry and DWORD is 0x000000ff (255) which is incorrect.

I fixed the issues as follows:

a) Click on ‘Start’ and type ‘regedit’ in the start search box, and then press ENTER.
b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
c) Navigate to the following registry key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
d) Check if you have the following entry in the name column: ‘NoDriveTypeAutoRun’
e) And make sure it has a “91”value, under the Data column.
f) If the entry is missing (If it is present skip to the next step), right-click in the right pane in an empty area, and click on ‘New’ and select ‘DWORD(32-bit) Value’ and name the key ‘NoDriveTypeAutoRun’.
g) Select the entry, right-click on it and click on ‘Modify’ and Type ‘91’ in ‘Value data’ and under ‘Base’ select ‘Hexadecimal’ and click ‘OK’.
h) Exit the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

The last solution worked perfectly.
