I agree with you that anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewalls are important and I consider a firewall to be essential. Just as a point of reference, there are folks who run without an anti-virus program and without an active anti-malware program and they do just fine, no infections.

I stated that a security suite was not essential; I did not say that security programs were not important. Maybe I did not explain myself very well. I was trying to say that an OS is essential; a computer is useless without one. And for compatibility for most folks, OS choices are very limited. On the other hand, there are a wide variety of security tools available - from suites to stand alone programs. That is the point I was trying to make.

As I stated previously, I do not like suites for for several reasons. I prefer and use stand alone programs. I am behind a router with a hardware firewall. I also have software firewalls installed on our two machines as well as anti-viral and malware programs.

But this past weekend my son told me I should take a look at their latest offering and trusting his judgment and the fact that my ISP (Comcast) offered it as part of my service I decided to give it a try! Norton Security suite to my surprise was a lean clean program! It is well worth your time to put away your prejudice and take a good look at their latest and greatest.

My parents had Norton on their system (HP, dual core AMD, 2GB DDR2) and it was dog slow. I uninstalled Norton and put on Microsoft Security Essentials and their computer is fast again. They have thanked me repeatedly for it and even took me out to a steak dinner.

Thanks for the steak, Microsoft!

I always wonder how others can have such a different experience.

My brother has a few PCs, we have two and my sister has one. We all use N2010 and find it uses on average 10MB of RAM. I have formatted our two PCs a number of times over the last two years due Windows problems and each time Norton installs clean everytime.

well my Eset Smart Security is due to expire in 12 days, and unfortunately I haven't got enought mula to renew my license. So when it expires I'll most likely install Avast, as for a firewall, I was thinking either COMODO or just stick with the default Windows Firewall.

However that being said, I've been using ESET for a almost a year now and I find it to be the best.

Ok so Norton (Symantec) was bad and it was!! They have a new offering and in MHO it appears solid! I can't give you a testimonial that its a percent better than what your using none of them are 100% But it is lean and fast and i have run a leak test on it (GRC) and so far so good! The price is certainly affordable!
So as I said in the beginning put aside your prejudice and take a good long peek!

So far, I am liking Comodo. Controlling outgoing programs is not as in your face simple as with ZA; but I am learning the program.

just a short tip: run Comodo in "Training mode" for a few days if you get to many popups, then switch to "Safe mode"

As a general note on the Comodo Internet suite - which is the only way to get the firewall these days.

If the pop-ups are a major annoyance - the majority are actually not caused by the Firewall in a standard install, but by defence plus.

Defence plus is IMO a good aid to the safe operation of the system and would advise it's use, but If you just require a firewall it can be switched off, toned down, or even not installed/uninstalled quite easily.

Hey there! You're security setup seems to be over-kill. I can't believe your system can handle that much security software. I like your setup though.

I agree totally , (though I normally skip the training mode phase altogether )

I made the post as some users may have other security measures in place to perform the functions of Defence plus, and therefore only require the firewall, which is no longer available as a separate product, (when I last checked ).

I would also like to point out that the standard install also includes a few free additions, (Internet toolbar), which I always decline, though I do find the "threatcast" a useful aid.
