Avast, And Other Anti Virus Programs Question

Hello,

Have finally convinced my son to take anti virus software seriously.

Told him to try avast free which I use.

He did, but removed it as he claims it slows his pc down significantly.
Works fine on mine.

Anyway, any suggestions as to why this might be ?

And, any suggestions on other "good" free ones he can try that are very easy to
configure and use ?

He is very non technical.

I use two active security programs that are free.
1. Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows
which is free from Microsoft
2. The built in Windows 7 Firewall.
Please note: Several millions of people all over the world also use them.

Try Microsoft's Security Essentials. Even if he were a gamer and wanted every last ounce of resources his computer had, it doesn't strain your system. He could temporarily disable it while gaming if he wanted every last bit of juice. You go into settings and select "Turn off real-time protection".

I never really understood the "turn off your A/V" thing; couldn't you add an exception to a whitelist or something? Never had to do this myself, so my impression is that this applies to those heavy-handed overprotective A/V suites that jump on anything if you so much as even look in the direction of an installer (*coughNortoncough*).

Used Avast Pro before (had a 2 year subscription) on my Dell Inspiron, didn't have any issues which could be attributed to it. Now I use MSE like many here do. Heavy gamer, always buying and installing and removing stuff. MSE is very well behaved.

Trucidation, I think what some gamers struggle with is not how the antivirus messes with games (ie blocks them, detects parts of them as malware, etc.), but rather how it takes CPU power away from really intense games. It could potentially cause games to slow down and/or lose framerates. While MSE is relatively low in "resource taking power", it could still be taxing on systems that aren't the "all powerful" systems that some of us have. For example, MSE on my system doesn't cause any noticeable difference in games, but that may not be true for someone else with a different system.

That very true DustSailor some system any anti virus will slow them down somewhat. Getting infected will slow them down even more. A train can't slow your system. Yes I did read all your specs.
