Avast Updating Twice

I've noticed several times when I shut down or let it sleep a couple days, on startup avast will take a bit to upload new definitions and then when I try to open Firefox or Windows Live Mail, after a few minutes it will update a second time with a new definition number.

My old Vista machine doesn't do this. Why can't avast just update once whether it's been shut down one day or three with W7?

It may be a temporary glitch, and avast may resolve it as soon as it finds out about it.

Problems of this nature have happened in the past.

Might want to give it a few days...

It could be but it's happened every time I haven't used that computer for a couple of days.

I use Avast on my mom's 8.1 desktop. When I restart the computer after an update, it says "Welcome to Avast". It's supposed to say it when the computer boots or logs on.

I don't' recall seeing that. The little orange ball just goes round and round and then the message pops up that virus database has been updated. Then, as I mentioned, a couple minutes later it does it again with a different version of an update.

I'll check out the forum and see if anyone has experienced this or can give an answer as to why. Thanks for the link and suggestion.

Which program version do you have installed?

I have the latest which is:

Program version: 2015.10.1.2208
Virus definitions version 141116-1
Number of definitions: 2,781,463

Not sure if Number of definitions is relevant though for each and every computer that has this version of Avast installed.

To find out which version you have installed, right click on your Avast icon in the notification tray and choose About Avast from the list.

The program version is 2014.9.0.2021 but I have the same virus definition as you...141116-1. I just updated to the 2015 program version...in progress.

I have the new version now but it's added a firewall, which I don't need. I have the built in Windows Firewall.

I have a feeling you didn't uncheck the option to try the paid version that is offered when you upgrade the program to the latest version.

Not sure how long the trial of the paid for version is offered. Could be 30 days and you will start getting notifications that the trial version has expired, at which time you should be able opt out.

It indicated 20 days left. I must have overlooked the paid part. I didn't opt to pay. I fixed the firewall and it's no longer operable.

Yes. That is easy to do. Anyone who has a tendency to overlook prechecked software can install Unchecky. I recommend this program for those who are notorious for installing foistware once I clean their machines.
