"AVG Internet Security 2011" Dec. 1st Update is PROBLEMATIC!

MSE was made as a upgrade for Defender, since it is siutable to replace other AVs it has been made an option.

When MSE is installed it will replace Defender, this is recommended by many knowledgable security Gurus.

If you post that question on the Security forum you will get explainations.

I have never ran Defender due to reviews on it.

I do not think I even had a choice whether to run Defender. It seems it was installed and to run by default when I installed W7 pro. I happened to know it was running when I checked updates / event logs.

MSE is an upgrade to defender. It is designed to scan for more types of malware/virii than defender is.

In my limited understanding Defender is integrated into MSE.Therefore you don't need both.

Last big update from AVG 2011 that involved a restart turned all my internet desktop shortcuts into the blank white page with a shortcut pointer. I couldn't fix it and had load an Acronis image of my drive. I tested it with the AVG download and sure enough that's what's doing it. I again reloaded the image and unplugged the net and uninstalled AVG via their uninstaller available here AVG - Download tools and installed Avast and everything is back to normal. I've had AVG forever with no problems. I hate to say goodbye but that's it. I'm using Win 7 64 bit on an ASUS Sabertooth MB with an i7 930.

Sorry to hear that, brigde33.

The last update involving a restart caused no issues with me whatsoever. When was that update?

The last one I experienced was on January 27th.

That date sounds right for me too. I had to back track the magnitude of change that might have caused it and only later remembered the AVG update. I remember about a week ago ( I mean a week prior to the update) AVG said in a bulletin pop-up that if I had the ZoneAlarm tool bar installed to DL the enclosed fix. I do have ZoneAlarm but I don't have that toolbar. Maybe they enclosed that fix anyway in the update...? I don't know.

To be more clear, I did not DL the AVG fix for the ZoneAlarm toolbar and can only speculate that it may have been included in the later major update.

Neither do I, bridge33.

If the issue were widespread, a fix would have been released immediately and I would surely have posted about it.

I'm really sorry to hear of your issue and, with all due respect to you, I don't think this can be laid at the feet of the AVG team.

I agree with that assessment and logic, however there is no doubt being that I actually tested the update two times i.e. loaded the image again X2 with no problem and then did the update with the same result and on the third time installed Avast eliminating the problem, that AVG is at least playing a part in whatever was modifying my web shortcut icons. I have no other glitches or hiccups in this system and did full system scans with both AVG before the uninstall and Avast after with 0 problems. Whatever the case thanks for your response.

The important thing is that you resolved the issue. I'll do a bit of checking on this and get back to you.

Again, sorry to hear you ran into this issue. Such things are never fun, as I mentioned early on in this thread regarding the AVG fiasco that is the subject therein.

Do you have the paid version or the free version of AVG?

That's very considerate, have a pleasant evening!

Sorry missed that last part--I had the free edition. AVG has been good to me and I've had them from the beginning. I have nothing bad to say about AVG, this is just a bump in the road.

Thanks, bridge33.

It is possible AVG removed a piece of malware, after the update, that got through prior to the update thereby altering a key logon component in the registry as related to Explorer. I can understand that such a possibility, alone, might cause enough concern to try a different AV. Should you desire to retry AVG at a later date, please don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have.

All software can have various glitches. One of the avast updates also created several issues for Dell owners. It has been my experience that AVG have more than as compared to the others.
