Hello everybody,

I would like to backup 50 GB of photos to dvds. Is there a free utility that can do the job for me? Actually, I already have a free program for burning DVDs, but I am searching for software that can organize data on my hard drive in such a way that can be easily burnt on DVDs.

Thanks for help,
LOR

I use Roxio Creator to burn my photos. It allows me to select all of the photos I want to copy/burn as well as select in what order I want them. Then it creates a temporary folder to store those photos (whether it's just 1 photo or 1000 photos.) As soon as the temporary folder is created, it asks me to select where I want to save the burned photos. Once I make my selection I click "start" and the Roxio software does the rest. I've also used ImgBurn, Nero, and CDBurnerXP in the past and they all worked the same way. Doesn't your burning software give you similar options?

50GB will probably be a large number of individual photos to burn to DVDs. Rather than DVDs, have you considered perhaps a 64GB or 128GB flash drive? I've seen 64GBs for as low as $35 and 128GBs for under $60. (Or even a 1TB external USB hard drive for under $100.) One advantage would be easier organization by creating individual folders such as Vacation Photos, Holiday Photos, Family, etc or multiple folders sorted by type and date (Vacation, 2010, Vacation 2011, Holiday 2012, Holiday 2013, etc) as well as being much easier to edit the photos (adding, deleting) later on.

If I've completely misunderstood your question, I sincerely apologize.

Thank you for trying to help marsmimar. :) I already have a flash drive for storing data, but somehow I think that a good old DVD copy should be used for double security. What I am actually trying to find is an utility that can help me organize my files in 4.5 GB folders. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
LOR

Thanks for help mjf. An additional problem I am facing when I want to categorize my folders is a lack of the folder size column in windows explorer for win 7. I have to limit all folders that I want to backup to 4.5 GB each. Isn't there a handy freeware that can do the job for me?

Yesterday I had a very bad experience with a VBS script virus that turned all my files into shortcuts and it was almost impossible to delete. So I spent 4 hours cleaning my flash drive from the virus. Somehow I believe in a good old DVD copy of important data.

Thanks for help 4wd.

Isn't there a freeware that can split a large folder full of date into 4.5 Gb folders according to a given criteria (fore example: the date of file creation etc...)?

Take a look at Folder Axe. I've never used it so can't offer any personal experiences. The download link is at the bottom of the page (NOT the large green button.)

Looks like an interesting utility, tested it, but immediately crashes here when initiating a split.

Appreciate the feedback, 4wd. Maybe there are similar utilities out there. :)

Glad you liked FreeCommander (as always with any free program that prove to be useful, evaluate a donation to it's 'inventor').
