When I place a new disk in for backup, it works. When I want to backup again, sometimes it works and sometimes does not. Then a message appears asking me to put the right disk in. Why can I not use the same disk again? I thought backup only adds the new files and updates the old files if they were changed. I managed a workaround by erasing the disk and reformatting it. but why should I have to do that? I use dvd rw disks for my backups.

According to many threads on this and other forums, it seems the native Windows 7 backup/imaging tool is not very reliable. Especially when trying to burn data to a disk. Compounding the issue is what brand of optical drive is being used. Some drives seem to prefer a particular brand of disk or a particular disk type (CD-RW, DVD-RW or CD+RW, DVD+RW.) For these reasons, a lot of people recommend backing up to an external hard drive and using something like the free Macrium Reflect instead of the built-in Windows 7 tool. Here's a previous Seven Forums thread that may help:

And here are a couple of Microsoft articles that may provides some info on how to successfully burn data to a disk:
