Backup problem

What is the purpose of the 50 GB partition,
the purpose of the >700 gb partition.

Which partitions do you want to backup?

You might find places like Fry's, BestBuy, Target, to be places to shop for an external usb drive in your price and size range.

Your Disk 0 has two partitions:
a little 100 megabyte partition which is the System Reserved Partition and is used for recovery purposes
AND the C partitiion which is, in your case, where all of tbe boot files, the system files, and no doubt your program files and probably many data files.

Disk 1 has 3 partitions:
Disk 1 has the potential to be a backup location for Disk 0.
Those 3 partitions--what is the purpose of each and every one of them?

You have already posted a picture showing the output of Disk Management.

Look at that post of yours.
You will see that Disk1 has one very large partition which has about 40% free.
Disk 1 also has a partition which is shown as being 100% free but that is not necessaryily true since Win 7 doesn't handle certain partition types created by things such as Linux in a useful manner.
Disk 1 has a completely free and completely unused partition at the very end.

If your objective is to backup both disk 0 and disk 1, then you will need a corresponding backup approach.

If your objective is to backup only the C, then you will need a corresponding backup approach.

If your objective is to backup only your data files, then you will need a corresponding backup approach.

We can sit here and give you all kinds of info, but we would much rather give you a directed solution for your backup desires.

The present main concern is the purpose of the other partitions now that we know about that one.

And we need to know what kind of backup are you interested in performing.

A whole back up of C:\ is what I want, so that if this computer crashes I can get a complete restoration. That other partition shouldn't even exist and I don't know why it does.

What "other" partition are you talking about?

On disk 0 there is only one more partition and that is 100 mb and is the system reserved partition which will automatically included in a system image backup.

On disk 1 you have three partitions.

quickly, since your main interest is to backup your C drive, then I'm going to recommend that you get a 500GB external USB drive to use for backups.

Putting that 100GB partition to good use will be easy, but...

Well I mean if I can put the 100g back to the normal disk on disk 1 then I should be able to fit the backup - I just haven't worked with partitioning for so long that I forget how.

Ok no problem. Scratch what I said before.
E: is for like my videos/music backup, and I also want to store an image of my C: on there.
D: is for my backed up Wii games.
And the unallocated partition of 100G shouldn't be there. I want to combine it with E: again.

Now if the D was an ntfs formatted partition, I'd charge ahead for you.

But, since I'm not a Gamer, then I'm going to ask a couple of the guys for advice.

I've been hoping that some of the lurkers, and I know that there are some gamers amongst them, would jump in here with advice.

I assume you have used wbfs to create that partition and put the iso files there in a compressed format.

Win 7 will only "recognize" partitions with a type code from a small subset of the full range of type codes. When Win 7 finds a partition with a non-blessed type code, then the partition will be listed as "raw".

I no nothing of that "manager" program which was used to put the files in that partition. Will that program allow you to copy or move all of the files in there to another location?

Yeah I used that program, and it's formatted as FAT32.
I just fiddled a bit with the program and I can't find any way to move the files.

If it was formatted as Fat32, then the partition would be recognized.

Let's do this:
Go to an elevated command prompt=run cmd.exe as administrator
enter following commands:
DiskPart
List disk
select disk 1
detail disk
list partition
select partition 2
detail partition

---now notice what the "type" is

Exit
Exit

If i didn't goof then we now have the type code of the "raw"partition

It gave me the type of D: which is just 'Partition' as the type.
