Backup will not complete in order to restore windows, please help

I have a Dell Inspiron N5010 with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. First off, I have been trying to install updates on my computer and they keep failing. Since my computer has been acting sluggish. I have tried installing them one at a time and the windows repair tool and neither has worked. The next step is to restore windows correct? In order to restore windows I need to backup my files on the computer on a DVD-R or an external hard drive. I have tried running the back up on a Sandisk Verbatim 4gig flash drive and it is not working. It doesn't display any error messages or anything, it just says "back up did not complete successfully". I am not a guru by any means, just in college and trying to get my computer back up to speed before the next semester. Pleas help, anything regarding getting my computer running right again would be beneficial. Thanks!

Next, please follow these steps:

1. Click the Start rb:
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe, and then click on 'Run as Administrator'
4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter on the keyboard

Once it finishes, please post back the results in your next reply.

ok i updated my system info and ran the scan now in the command prompt and this is what it showed:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS\.log.

The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

I'd suggest running the sfc /scannow at least once more to make sure there aren't any other damaged or corrupt system files (you should get a prompt at the end of the scan that Windows Resource Protection Found No Integrity Violations.)

Did you try running marsmimars advice and run sfc a few more times?

Also, did you install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7?

ok the first one didnt work, it stalled out at 0% and never budged. The second one would run by itself and then close out automatically from the time i clicked the link and, once it closed out nothing happened. Man this is getting tough, just wanted to say thanks golden for helping. Maybe we can get this figured out

CheckSUR failing that early may indicate a problem with either the download or the system.

Please check your system for malware -

1) is your Anti-Virus up-to-date and switched on? Update it manually, and run a full system scan (which AV is it?)
2) Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) www.malwarebytes.org and update it, and run a full scan (DO NOT enable the Real-Time protection option!) in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.
Delete everything it finds

Reboot and test Windows Updates again

Just a though. Because the problem is downloading and not installing. Please check your bios and Windows time. If their not correct it will not download.
