Bassless sound in Windows 7

I'm not too knowledgable when it comes to audio, but I'll try to explain as much as I can. I just upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 on my Dell Studio Desktop. I think my Audio card is the Realtek Audio HD Manager? I have a desktop speaker system. (Altek Lansing) With two speakers and a sub.

The sound overall seems to be bassless even when I turn the speaker bass knob to max. I played around with WOW effects and the equalizer in Windows Media player until I got the desired sound, but all other programs I use including internet sites, DVD, etc all seem to have no bass.

I checked to make sure all the wires are plugged in completely and firmly and are in the correct port (green). I've noticed many people mentioning downloading Driver Updates to fix this problem. My only problem is I'm not sure where to start downloading. I guess I just need to confirm my Audio card type and which driver update or setting will make the speakers get their bass back over all the programs.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

(By the way my install was smooth, error free and I'm satisfied so far..except for the no bass...)

Hi I have the same problem! I have a Toshiba A200-1js (Portuguese model) and it happens the same to me!

yeah sorry for posting an unhelpful comment..
but i posted pretty much the same question like a day ago

I can't seem to figure it out - its like its playing but really quietly. And like you, i turned up all of the WOW effects in WMP and even then i could only hear a few bits of bass.

My driver works fine because the bass plays fine in the sound tests. :s
Only thing is when i try to download realtek official driver - it keeps saying its corrupt.

OK, I would suggest first of all to try and hunt down the most recent drivers for your audio interface. However, I'm not convinced it will solve your problem.
If you're really not getting any bass out of your system then maybe its your connections. It may seem obvious but its always worth checking. Plug in a set of headphones instead of the speakers and compare the sound.
If you're getting bass through those then there's something wrong with your speakers or sub. If not...well get yourself a proper audio card.
They're not too expensive, but the improvement in sound quality is huge.
Try the lower end of professional PCI cards such as the E-MU0404 or M-Audio AudioPhile 192 (AP192)
I have a audio project studio running with the AP192 and I have to say it is superb!
