BBC iplayer buffering

when trying to watch anything on iplayer it keeps buffering and stopping any ideas how to improve it thanks.

Hello there. This could be a result of many things. First off all, try to fill out as much as possible to your system specs on your profile, please. How fast is your internet speed? You can test it at http://www.speedtest.net/

In very basic terms, Ping is about the signal from and to the Server that supplies your PC with the information from your ISP (Internet Service Provider). It's measured in very small increments of time, nanoseconds I think.

The Download speed you have, is something you need to take another look at. It will not be 265 Mbps, that is a fantastic download speed and I would like to move in next door if you had that! It is eother 2.65 or 26.5, but I think it will probably be 2.65 Mbps. That is in line with my own current average of 2.6 download and 0.66 upload. I live in a rural area of Lincolnshire, do you also live in a rural area? we get garbage speeds.

Download is the speed at which information comes into your PC, when you download something like a music album or a game. Upload is when you are trying to send something OUT to someone else. The speeds you and I have are pretty low. To demonstrate this, use another Speedtest - internet-speedtest.net

This will check your speeds, then give you the option to type your FULL phone number in a box. A new window will open, telling you how long it will take you to download Videos, films and MP3 tracks. From this speedtest, the information also goes to your ISP, giving them a record of what your speed is. I carry out one of these every day, at varying times.

Please don't think I am an expert in any way, I am only self-taught and willing to be corrected by other forumites here!

says I can download a
MP3 in 11.86 Seconds
Video in 39.53 Minutes
DVD in 3.29 Hours

You live at the Southern end of the County to me: a few more miles and you would not be in Lincs!

Those figures mean that your Broadband speeds are in line with mine, and your download at that test, will be 2.65 Mbps. Using the internet-speedtest service will give you speeds in Kbps, which will show more digits - it's the same thing, just divide by 100 and you get Mbps.

We are very lucky in our village. The government has decided to use Legbourne as a village test case for the Rural Broadband Initiative, BT Openreach have been running Fibre optic cable through the village. They have come all the way from Grimsby, down the A16 to Louth, and on to Mablethorpe. The Fibre Optic is now live, but they are not cabling to the home. Instead they have put in new Cabinets - the boxes that BT use to supply all the telephone services - and this is called FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet). People in bigger towns and cities who have cable to their homes, with Virgin for example, have FTTH - Fibre To The Home. As usual, we country people lose out and we only get FTTC.

But it does mean that our Line can receive a FTTC service, which is what I am about to change to. I am going with Plusnet and they will use BT Openreach to install a FTTC service, with a new line and BT box, new router and a special BT modem to accept the service. This will give me at least another 2.5 Mbps, rising to as much as 16Mb as the service balances out. I am as you would expect, very chuffed with this!

In time, this service will spread across Lincs. You will probably get it, as you live like me quite close to a town (Holbeach). I am just 2 miles out of Louth on the A157 and the pepole of Louth have had a FTTH service live this last month. (Although they have to pay for the cabling to the home.) So hang on in there Vallee, you may benefit in the end. Personally, I would not swap living in my village for a town house with speeds of 50 Mbps, but that is just me, I've always been a Country Boy! (Bit more than a boy now though!)

A friend of mine who lives in Luton and has Talktalk went with the Fibre Optice line and its terrible he is always complaining about it, I must agree with you much prefer living here to a Town lets hope soon the whole country is getting faster Broadband.
